Turkey's leader asks Obama to thwart genocide vote
Source: AP

ANKARA, Turkey -- Turkey's prime minister has asked the U.S. president to prevent a possible House vote on a resolution declaring the World War I-era killings of Armenians a genocide.

Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu told parliament on Monday that Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan had sent U.S. President Barack Obama a letter asking he prevent the vote, saying it could damage ties between the two allies.

Davutoglu said: "we cannot allow the resolution to hang over Turkish-US ties like a Sword of Damocles."

5. It was a genocide for sure, and considering the way Erdogan has treated Obama:
Obama should do him no favors.

to this request than just pretty please.

Because frankly, I don't see why we should go out of our way to spare the feelings of a country who has done nothing but undermine us for years.

9. Davutoglu's focus is wrong...
Davutoglu said: "we cannot allow the resolution to hang over Turkish-US ties..."

The problem is that the Genocide (and the refusal to take responsibility) hangs over Turkey. The EU regularly cites it in it's refusal to allow Turkey entry into the EU. Meanwhile, there are many in Turkey who figure it better to face it than to continue denying it.

Still, Israel (that's right, Israel!) refuses to recognize the Genocide. Since Turkey holds sway over that country, they might feel they can prevail over the US.

11. Is this really what's preventing Turkey from getting into the EU?
Given the behavior of some current EU members over the last hundred years, I'd be surprised to hear THIS was the blocking factor.

12. It's a very important factor. The French and Italians are very adamant
about Turkey owning up to it's complicity. There are also sizable Armenian populations in both countries.

Simply put, their attitude to the Turks is: Own up or you can't join up.

So, Turkey has its prick in a cleft stick on this issue.

A group of Muslim women and children from Hizir İllias village, Diyarbakir, helpless and defenseless on account of the absence of their husbands and male relatives serving in the Army, were, on July 23, 1915, slaughtered at Mersin Dere, by means of daggers and shot by rifles in a most pitiless and horibble way by an Armenian Band under the the notorious and well known bandit Hono.

These bands which had specially come from Van and Talory for the purpose of terrorizing the locality were under the leadership of the famous bandit Dorian Dano and his brothers and who afterwards were discovered to have taken refurge in the Armenian village of Beshnik, in Silvan.

Edited on Sat Dec-25-10 05:50 PM by gerenimox
the christian world recognizes the so called armenian genocide because armenians are christians

but the more important question is why those christian countries recognizing the so called Armenian genocide do not recognize the genocides carried out by christians such as the Turkish, Azeri, Bosnian, Algerian, Incan, Mayan, Aztek, Native American and Australian Aborigin genocides.

Have and answer to that?
