Letter Said to Be From Al Qaeda Threatens Spain
I don't know what to believe anymore. Doesn't this seem rather convienent? I hate thinking like this and being this distrustful of anyone. But it sure plays into Shrubs "no appeasement" mantra.

ADRID, April 5 — Investigators on Monday studied a letter purportedly from Al Qaeda promising "an inferno" unless Spain withdrew its troops from Iraq and Afghanistan. Meanwhile, the police reported the arrest of another suspect in the March 11 bombings of commuter trains in Madrid that killed 191 people and wounded more than 1,400.

In France on Monday, special forces rounded up 13 suspected members of a militant Islamic group thought to be behind bombings last year in Casablanca, Morocco.

After a tumultuous weekend, during which at least four suspects in the Madrid bombings blew themselves up, the newspaper ABC published in its Monday issue a Spanish translation of a letter written in Arabic that it had received by fax on Saturday. It was signed Abu Dujana al-Afghani, who described himself as a member of "Al Qaeda of Europe."

A videotape found two days after the train bombings had featured a man speaking in Arabic with a Moroccan accent who identified himself by that name and said he was the military spokesman of Al Qaeda. He said the March 11 bombings were revenge for Spain's military cooperation with the United States.

1. I say it's bullshit.

I think you're suspicions are absolutely correct.

3. This afternoon both FAUX and CNN
in reports about the letter used the exact same terminology - They said the letter stated "that unless Spain withdrawls its support for THE WAR ON TERROR..."

Hmmmm

5. Appeasemet never works
but you have to fight the right battle. As we all know, Iraq posed no threat to the USA. The fight should be covert and under the radar screen. Take out the bad guys without dismantling an entire country and it's people. Unfortunatley, Spain will find this out the hard way because they will continue to be a target.

6. What possible motivation could "AlQaeda" have to do this?
Edited on Mon Apr-05-04 08:20 PM by leesa
Spain has withdrawn its support. Why would any supposed terrorist group do this now? This has right wing propaganda written all over it.

7. Terrorists don't care Leesa. About anyone. They sense weakness.

Smell blood. They're not going to stop now. Spain hasn't withdrawn it's troops yet. Who's to say AlQaeda won't keep screwing with Spain because it's on the ropes. ETA has learned a valuable lesson. Biggest mistake they ever made was giving the appearance that a terrorist attack influenced an election. Now Spain has multiple terrorist groups on their trail.
Furthermore, Spaniards will come to regret the results of this last election. It's only affirmed to terrorists worldwide that their tactics work (on some, people that is).

8. Huh?
The attack was not what influenced the Spanish elections, although the propaganda that was spewed by the far right wanted people to believe that.

If what you say is true, then we certainly are damned if we do and damned if we don't reselect Shrub, huh? Dethrone him and we are catering to terrorists? Allow him to be re-selected and we'll end up in WWIII.

Sorry Sixtoes, I'm not buying it.

You eventually will. Time will tell. And what I can't understand is why people can be bamboozled into thinking AQ cares anything about Iraq, either. They'll pick any convenient issue to strike. It's power trip in Spain, now.

9. Leesa
since when do terrorists care about anyone? They could care less about the Spanish elections other than they helped determine the outcome. Now that Spain has shown themselves to be weak...they will pay a higher price.

Please don't get me wrong. I/m ok with the new spanish govt. I just think the way it came about sends a wrong messgae to the bad guys.

Sooner or later, people will grow tired of AQ's crap. Meanwhile, they're getting a bigger and bigger foothold, until then. Watch Spain. Then let's not do that.

10. Sounds like the pnac is stirring the pot again!...Sending Al Qaida letters
to Spain after they have chosen to vacate Iraq smells
a little fishy.

It's getting easier to follow Rove/Cheney's footsteps.
