US brands Sadr an outlaw (News24)
<snip>

Baghdad - US authorities in Iraq on Monday branded Moqtada Sadr, a radical cleric from the Shiite majority, an outlaw.

Sadr is at the head of an uprising against the US-led occupation of the country, where at least seven US soldiers and 46 Iraqis were killed on Sunday.

Paul Bremer, the US civilian administrator of Iraq, pledged that US forces would stop Sadr from trying to seize authority. "We have a group under Moqtada al-Sadr that has basically placed itself outside the legal authorities, the coalition and Iraqi officials," Bremer said.

"He is attempting to establish his authority in the place of the legitimate authority. We will not tolerate this. We will reassert the law and order which the Iraqi people expect," Bremer told a national security meeting.

1. What "legitimate authority" is Bremer referring to?
Him and George Bush?

2. Close your eyes and see Scott McClellan
saying "We will reassert the law and order which the Iraqi people expect," Do they all have the same script writers?

It ain't a coalition.
It ain't provisional.
And it got no authority.
Natch.

Remember, the 10 o'clock show is always different than the 8 o'clock show.

The fucking genius of the U.S administered fiasco could well lead to this.

"Iraq readmitted to axis of evil after America makes things worse"

Creating their very own rogue state. How fucking stupid are these people?

7. As was illustrated yesterday, screwing with Sadr will lead to...
...utter chaos. He has a deeply loyal following which is willing to die for him - even willing to throw themselves under a TANK for him.

This going to go down hill fast... :(

8. He's also got a lot of family members
who are clerics. So even if the US is stupid enough to try to kill him in order to silence him, it will only make matter even worse than they already are.

9. The BBC is already referring to the Shia "uprising" in Iraq
Are we going to do to the Shia what Saddam did to them?

10. Typical Repugnant solution. Treat the symptoms, not the disease.
No, they can't be rioting because we deny them access to free speech, because we killed 10,000 of their mothers, fathers, sisters, and brothers, because they still don't have their basic human needs fulfilled, like water, electricity, and especially security.

It has to be that bastard cleric who wanders around exercising his free speech, inciting people to stand up for their beliefs. Don't get me wrong, I think this guy is bad news, and I don't support what he's saying, but from the Iraqis' POV, it looks like America is spitting on the Quran and shitting on thier freedoms. To them, it seems as though the only legal speech is pro-America speech. Everything else is outlawed. Wouldn't we react the same way if we thought our 1rst amendment rights were being taken away?
<NOTE: Ashcroft is currently after the fourth, not first, amendment.>

12. Remember that is was Bremer that shutdown the Shia newspapers
Edited on Mon Apr-05-04 07:29 AM by IndianaGreen
rioting broke soon afterwards.

The BBC reminds the readers that it was Bremer's actions that triggered the Shia uprising:

The protests were triggered by the closure of Mr Sadr's main newspaper a week ago; they intensified after the arrest on Saturday of one of his top aides, Mustafa Yacoubi.

Many of Iraq's majority Shia Muslims, repressed under Saddam Hussein, welcomed last year's US-led invasion and attacks on coalition forces were largely confined to the minority Sunni community before Sunday's violence.

However Mr Sadr has become an increasingly outspoken opponent of the occupation.

The US administrator in Iraq, Paul Bremer, said on Monday that Mr Sadr's followers had effectively placed themselves outside the law.

13. Profile of Moqtada Sadr
He's still young, so could be around for many years to come. :scared:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/3600369.stm

Moqtada Sadr has been a thorn in the Americans' side ever since they overthrew the Saddam Hussein government a year ago. He is young, probably no more than 30, and his base of support is relatively small.

Yet he comes from an illustrious Shia religious family, and his fiery speeches denouncing the American occupiers of Iraq strike a chord - especially among the young.

The Americans have never been sure how to handle him. Their preferred option is that the most senior Shia religious figures, including Ali al-Ayatollah Sistani, should marginalise him.

Privately, there is said to be little love lost between the older men - who regard Sadr as a dangerous hothead - and Sadr and his supporters who accuse the religious elders of excessive caution.
