5. Reports of Fire on Plane at Kennedy Airport
Source: NYT

By MICHAEL S. SCHMIDT

More than 100 firefighters were dispatched Sunday to John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens awaiting the arrival of a plane that is said to be on fire, according to the fire department.

The fire department received a call shortly after 5 p.m. that an airborne plane was on fire. "Right now the plane is in the air and it appears like it might be dumping fuel before it lands," said a spokesman for the Fire Department.

In response to the reports, 25 fire units and 106 members were dispatched the airport.

"We are there on standby waiting for it to land," said the Fire Department spokesman. "Unclear if it’s the engine or a wing."

The spokesman said he did not know when the plane was likely to land. And officials were unsure how serious the situation was.

6.  Delta flight makes safe emergency landing at JFK
Edited on Sun Nov-21-10 06:03 PM by Ian David
NEW YORK CITY (BNO NEWS) -- A Delta Air Lines flight made a safe emergency landing at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York on late Sunday afternoon, officials said.

Delta Air Lines Flight 30 had declared an emergency after having unspecified engine problems. "There is some sort of engine problem with the plane," a spokesman for the New York City Fire Department said while the aircraft was still in the air.

The spokesman said the plane, a Boeing 767-300 with nearly 200 passengers on board, was dumping fuel before it attempted to make an emergency landing at JFK Airport. Delta Flight 30 had just begun a flight from New York to Moscow when its trouble began.

The aircraft landed safely at approximately 5.50 p.m. EST, without any reports of injuries.

11. TSA can stip everyone naked and do full cavity searches.
Edited on Sun Nov-21-10 06:20 PM by LisaL
Still won't ensure that plane will arrive to its destination because all TSA searches do nothing in case of a mechanical failure on the plane.

16. Somehow that seems like a bad idea in a situation like this. Plane's on fire... seems like the pilot
should be able to dump fuel.

20. There's safety equipment to put out an engine fire, and if it doesn't go out,
the land the plane WITH all the weight of the fuel. Very few commercial planes have fuel dumping capabilities anymore.

21. Not correct
Shorter range versions usually do not have the capability, however the long range ones do. I would assume a JFK to Moscow would be considered long range.

22. From Wiki:
"Longer-range twin jets such as the Boeing 767 and the Airbus A300, A310, and A330 may or may not have fuel dump systems, depending upon how the aircraft was ordered, since on some aircraft they are a customer option. Three- and four-engine jets like the Lockheed L-1011, McDonnell Douglas DC-10 / MD-11, Boeing 747 and Airbus A340 usually have difficulty meeting the requirements of FAR 25.119 near maximum structural takeoff weight, so most of those have jettison systems. A Boeing 757 has no fuel dump capability as its maximum landing weight is similar to the maximum take-off weight."
