A Toxic Cover-up? Bush administration covered up - 60 Min.
Edited on Sat Apr-03-04 07:09 PM by dArKeR
"The Bush administration came in and the scope of our investigation was considerably shortened. I had never seen something so corrupt and lawless in my entire career."

A government whistle-blower says the Bush administration covered up the reasons for a toxic coal slurry spill in Appalachia that ranks among the worst environmental disasters in U.S. history.

Jack Spadaro tells Correspondent Bob Simon that political appointees in the Department of Labor whitewashed a report that said an energy company that had contributed to the Republican Party was responsible for the 300-million gallon spill.

Simon's report will be broadcast on 60 Minutes, Sunday, April 4, at 7 p.m. ET/PT.
Spadaro was until recently the head of the National Mine Health and Safety Academy and played a key role in investigating the spill, which was 25 times the size of the Exxon Valdez disaster in Alaska.

"It polluted 100 miles of streams, killing everything in the streams, all the way to the Ohio River," says Spadaro of the October 2000 spill that affected West Virginia and Eastern Kentucky.

13. Read the story
Edited on Sat Apr-03-04 08:31 PM by Angel_O_Peace
From the article:
"The Bush administration came in and the scope of our investigation was considerably shortened. I had never seen something so corrupt and lawless in my entire career...interference with a federal investigation of the most serious environmental disaster in the history of the Eastern United States."

Although the spill happened prior to the 2000 theft of the Presidency, because of the * Administration, there was a cover-up as it didn't fly with the plans to deny ANY problems regarding the environment...just didn't fit in at all with all the devastation the * gang had for our lands and air.

Also, corporate interests took the front seat and the spill took the back seat.

<snip>
The company was going to be cited for serious violations that could have resulted in large fines and criminal charges, Spadaro says.

<snip>
In the end, Massey was fined about $110,000 and cited for two violations, not the eight Spadaro said his report was seeking. Spadaro refused to sign the shortened report, despite the request of the new Bush-appointed head of MSHA, and resigned from the investigation in protest. He then complained to the DOL, which rebuffed him, saying none of his allegations about Massey was substantiated.

PS Welcome to Du, stellanoir! :hi:

17. Do these guys have no sense of decency?
What about the old adage "You don't shit in your own bed"? I guess the BFEE justifies this by the fact that they don't live in Appalachia.

What cracked me up was this story was followed by Bush's whacky energy add (you know the one that accuses Kerry of trying to raise the gas tax 50 cents). Yeah, after the Sixty Minutes story I'm sure that add looked credible Chimpy boy.

21. US oil prices rise, supply falls during Bush years

US oil prices rise, supply falls during Bush years
Reuters, 03.05.04, 11:41 AM ET
(snip)
Guy Caruso, EIA administrator, said OPEC ministers are to blame for high prices and U.S. oil inventories that recently slid to the lowest level since the mid-1970s. "They played a role by restraining supply," he said of OPEC.

Still, the White House has refrained from criticizing OPEC. "We don't comment publicly on OPEC policy," is the typical administration response to the cartel's output decisions.

That stands in sharp contrast to Bush's remarks while a presidential candidate in January 2000.

"What I think the president ought to do is he ought to get on the phone with the OPEC cartel and say we expect you to open your spigots," Bush said at the time. "The president of the United States must jawbone OPEC members to lower the price."

Although the Bush team has succeeded in granting more permits for natural gas drilling on federal lands in Western states, U.S. crude oil output has continued a steady decline.

Oil output fell from 5.80 million barrels per day (bpd) in 2001 to 5.74 million bpd last year. This year, it is expected to drop to 5.63 million bpd this year, the EIA said.

At the same time, U.S. oil demand continues to rise.

Imports of crude oil rose from 10.90 million bpd in Bush's first year to 11.28 million bpd last year to make up for declining production. EIA projects oil shipments will average 11.65 million bpd in 2004.

As a result, oil imports accounted for 56.4 percent of U.S. crude supplies consumed last year, up 1 percent from 2001. This year, the nation will import 57 percent.

The price U.S. refiners paid for that foreign oil averaged $22 a barrel during Bush's first year, $27.74 in 2003 and should cost $27.68 this year, according EIA.

During the past three years, OPEC raked in an estimated $620 billion from the United States and other oil buyers.

Or a newbie Bu$hie bureaucrat from the donor side of the equation? How did things get so fucking bad so fucking fast?

On edit: And who out there think that the Bu$hies will ever grant Spadaro "whistle-blower" protection status? He will, mark my word, be made an example of. DO NOT FUCK WITH THE BU$H JUGGERNAUT. VERB SAP!

20. Jack Spadaro is a true hero
I hope he can stick it out long enough. The bushies have already tried to destroy him and now with this story coming out, they'll try harder.

Note the location - Appalachia. Once again it's the poor folks whose lives get trashed by these heartless and evil ethics energy companies. And what does our "government for the people" do, take sides with their contributors of course. Where is the outrage? Price William Sound, site of the Exxon Valdez spill, has not recovered after 15 years. This slurry spill is 25 times the size of the Exxon Valdez spill according to the story. Massey Energy gets a measly $110,000 in fines. Move on nothing to see here. These guys paid their protection money to the RNC.
The government does not belong to the people.

F**king Bastards! To Massey Energy and your bushie government protectionists - May your death profits offer you no comfort in your eternity in a hell pit of toxic coal slurry. May you reap what you have sown, because surely you deserve a taste of the environmental hell you have wrought.

Sonia
