Gulf states urge US to probe Wikileaks Iraq 'crimes'
Source: BBC

The Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) has urged Washington to investigate alleged "crimes against humanity" in Iraq after Wikileaks published scores of war logs.

The documents revealed by the whistleblower website suggest US forces turned a blind eye to widespread torture by Iraqi security forces.

In a statement, the council said the US was responsible for any alleged torture and killings committed by its troops.

The Pentagon has said it has no plans to reinvestigate the alleged abuses.

It insists that it has acted in accordance with international law, with reports being passed to superiors and, at the appropriate level, to the Iraqis.
Strong statement

The GCC is made up of six Arab countries - Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

1. And THAT'S what the Pentagon has been dreading with regard to the Wikileaks disclosure.

2. Maybe if they threaten to withhold oil,
we could get an investigation. of course it would be so ironic to bow to blackmail just to get Justice. Crazy world we live in.

6. I really don't think the Gulf states would ever stoop to blackmailing us again
the way they did in the 70s. They have so far tolerated so many atrocities from us including our egging on Israel in the countless attacks on helpless civilians in Palestine and the continued eating away of what's left of Palestine itself by Israeli settlements. They like the sales of arms they're getting from us almost as much as they like the crude they sell us and the inflated value they're getting from it in speculation in the international market and in commodities. I'm not sure how dollar devaluation works into this, but I can only speculate that they would probably not want us to get too pinched financially, any more than we are now anyway, since the dollar is still the main international currency and is in such a precarious situation. Like I said, I'm not sure how that would work into the equation and I'd be glad to get some input on it. But, they so far have bared their teeth a lot but haven't even tried to rock the boat too much. I can only surmise that this is to keep the status quo favoring them and that this is just more teeth baring with no bite to back it up.

3. Maybe this is an opening that will lead
to an actual investigation that will finally get some of the last administration behind bars. Maybe outside anger trumps local anger.

4. The major offenders
of crimes against humanity aren't even parties to the ICC.

Including the GCC.
