Now reported as 4.3.

Very dear friend's parents were on the news there a couple of weeks ago because apparently their country home is sitting right on top of the fault.

1. In Tulsa... shook the dishes in my cabinets
It took me a minute to process the whole thing. I mean... we live with tornadoes and they are no big deal.
I haven't had much earthquake experience.

5. Totally understand that re: tornadoes...grew up in OKC
Tornado warnings happen so often, you just kind of wiat it out, check the skies, and wish the TV beep beep weather warning would stop for a while. Personally, I grew up loving the wild weather and watching for the sky to grow green and the air to go still...it's pretty dramatic and totally fascinating :)

9. If I had to choose a natural disaster...
it would be a tornado. Relatively small path of destruction, and the almost always travel in a north east direction.

2. Hmm, is this in the New Madrid quake area?
We used to giggle about 4.5 when we lived in Los Angeles. But to folks not used to them, it could be scary as hell.

12. Scared the hell out of me. I thought there had been an explosion.
It was very loud, and my dog and one of the cats dove under the bed.

13. we were two blocks from a 6.8 quake at 4:30 in the morning
We really truly believed we were being bombed out of existence that morning.

Expect aftershocks. And put an extra pair of sneakers, prescription eyeglasses, and necessary meds in a safe place. Just in case.

was not knowing what was going on.

17. It's way west of New Madrid. I didn't know that OK was at all prone
to earthquakes - first I'd ever heard of.

Maybe it's because they've pumped all the oil out the ground there and the dry rocks are working against each other without the lubricant.

25. OK might have felt it, but the fault lines are 400 miles E of OK.
I was unaware of any active faults under OK itself.

29. I doubt if the USGS is aware of other faults in the central states
As the last NM quake was in 1812, they haven't much info on the area. But massive quakes can and do race outward in waves. I do know I don't want to be anywhere near any of the large cities in the area, if that puppy pops again. Los Angeles has tough building rules specifically for earthquakes. Midwest US states don't.

32. Yep. Another New Madrid would flatten St Louis and Memphis.
I wonder how many undiscovered mid-plate faults there are out there, just waiting.

34. I was always fascinated with watching the reports in California
I pretty much lived with a fetal monitor as part of my wardrobe before the Northridge quake. So I obsessed a bit ;-) After going through that, I've always got an emergency pack in the car, and shoes ready. And we've been in Georgia for 16 years. I don't think I'll ever go without, even if I move to Canada lol.

35. our neighbor had a Vischla dog that would make this skin-crawling howl
just before any quakes hit. You'd literally sit up straight if he started in. We were at work in the early am one day and noticed that all the night noises from the golf course just STOPPED, literally, before a quake rolled thru. THAT was eerie as hell.

20. LOL, tornadoes are a form of entertainment here
Edited on Wed Oct-13-10 12:39 PM by Wednesdays
Whenever there's a significant threat, all shows are pre-empted for hours, and the family gathers round the tube to watch Gary England. "That cell has significant rotation, so y'all take your tornado precautions..." ;) And we all gawk at the live videos taken by those crazy storm chasers.
