When I heard her father on the radio this morning, I felt so terrible for him and his family, not to mention the young lady. I hope she is not too bad off.

6. There's a detail in the CBS story I haven't heard on the local coverage
This bit:

Madison Police Capt. Luis Yudice had said investigators were trying to determine whether Seiler's disappearance was related to a Feb. 1 attack that left her unconscious when she was struck from behind by an unknown assailant.

I don't recall hearing on the local news about her being struck unconscious from behind by an unknown assailant on Feb 1st.

I don't think they reported that locally that I can recall.

Sunday they said that the Feb 1 had no connection to current - as far as they could tell - but they had no proof one way or another.

12. Maybe, but...
The whole thing about 'getting knocked unconscious from behind'...that really works a lot better in movies than it does in real life. It is extremely hard to 'knock someone out from behind' without fracturing their skull or otherwise causing a SERIOUS injury.

Again -- I'm probably just running really cynical on this. I've just had a strange feeling about this story since they mentioned she was missing Monday (when she'd been missing roughly 30 hours...).

I had my own experiences reporting someone missing a few years ago, and while they turned up on their own, we did not receive local or national media coverage about it...no police assistance either. That is probably why I'm feeling a bit cynical about this one...

5. "marshy area near the colliseum"
I guess they'd have to be talking about Olin Park? It's only about 3/4 mile from downtown. Really not easy to get 'lost' in there -- it's not that big. Maybe she was dropped off?

When her disppearance first hit the local news here last weekend, I thought it was really strange that they were so panicky about it. She'd only been 'missing' for one day. In my own experience, the police really don't want to hear about an adult being missing until they've been gone quite a bit longer than that -- especially a college student, and especially right after a weekend. Her parents in MN apparently reported her missing.

Glad she's fine, of course, but I have a strange feeling about this case. I'm not at all sure everything is what it seems in this. Perhaps it is, and I'm just being too cynical, who knows.

32. Strange circumstances
I agree that this got more exposure than your typical missing persons case. But there were some very strange circumstances:

(the following clipped from http://www.790thezone.com/APNews/APArticle.aspx?APNewsID=239407, emphasis mine).

Seiler was last seen on a surveillance tape from her apartment building early Saturday morning. She apparently left without her car or any personal belongings, and her door was left open.

More than two dozen investigators involved in the case are reviewing files of sex offenders and others with a criminal history living in the area of Seiler's apartment.

Seiler was involved in another mysterious incident on Feb. 1, when she was struck from behind by an unknown assailant and knocked unconscious, police said. She was then moved about a block from where she was attacked but was not sexually assaulted or robbed, authorities said.

Police are unsure if there was any connection between Seiler's disappearance and the attack.

"Audrey was worried after having been attacked and, as a result, was more careful to walk with friends and make sure she was safe," said her uncle, Scott Charlesworth-Seiler.

33. Well, they didn't check the surveillance tape until after she was missing
Edited on Wed Mar-31-04 07:51 PM by htuttle
I think it was her parents in Rockford, MN who decided she was missing Monday, and then they checked the tape, etc...

On that tape, BTW, she's standing by the door for awhile looking outside, apparently waiting for someone. She seems to go back upstairs, then she comes back down and leaves.

One last note: while the police department may have just been exceedingly cautious with their words, several local newscasters noted that they specifically did not use the words 'kidnapped' or 'abducted'. At least not yet.

Here's the description of the suspect they are looking for. It's believed to come from Audrey, but I'm not sure that is the case. Don't know where else it would have come from however:

White male
5'11" - 6'
20-30 yrs old
Black sweatshirt
Blue jeans

Average weight, average height, average appearance.

34. The tape isn't the strange thing

The strange thing is that she left her door open, and left without her car or any personal belongings. How often do you do that? Maybe for a few minutes, but more than that?

...and along John Nolan Drive. Heard from a very good source (someone who drove a TV newscaster to the scene).

Not sure if the police have actually seen anyone, but I'm told they are acting like they have.

Unless I get my wrists slapped, *I* too will post what I damn well feel like.

And I might ask a similar question of YOU.
Why did you feel it nessecary to attack "Law-abiding" (your words, not mine) gun owners?
Not all "gun nuts", as you stereotype them, are latent criminals just waiting for a chance.

I'll not be the reason this thread gets exiled to the Gungeon, so I will agree to disagree. We obviously are at opposite ends of the private firearm ownership question.

Pro-gunners are constantly saying that no one has to worry about "law-abiding gun owners". However, the papers are filled on a daily basis with stories where so-called law-abiding gun owners use their guns in a moment of rage to kill or injure others.

42. Speaking of "law abiding gun owners"...
Lots of ‘people on the street’ comments being shown on the MKE TV morning news shows:

“No, I don’t feel safe…”
“Do I think that what happened to her could happen to me? Yes…”
“I carry a whistle and my phone with me everywhere, but now I’m thinking about getting ‘mace’…”

Combine this with coverage of female college students admitting that they run from building to building on their own campus when they can’t take a shuttle or arrange a walking escort – and it really makes you wonder exactly what effect hearing comments like that has upon a human predator?

“Do I think that what happened to her could happen to me? Yes…” Honestly - Do you think that makes a rapist feel discouraged and reluctant to act, or excited?

What if there was a bill that the Governor could have signed that would have turned the tables on this whole situation – one that would make the criminals worry about THEIR safety instead?

Why in the world would people not support such a bill?
