Powdered Similac recalled after insect contamination found

Abbott Laboratories Inc said it is voluntarily recalling millions of containers of its top-selling Similac powdered infant formulas after beetles were found in the products and in a Michigan plant where they are made.

Abbott said on Wednesday that the recall, which could result in $100 million of lost revenue, comes after reports by two consumers of contamination, and its inspection of an area of the plant in Sturgis, Mich., where beetles or their larvae were found.

"The decision to recall the products was made in advance of the two consumer reports, which are being investigated," said Abbott spokeswoman Melissa Brotz.

Brotz said fewer than 5 million units of Similac are being recalled in the United States, Guam, Puerto Rico and other Caribbean markets.

"When we identified this, we did extensive testing of every product on the (factory) line, and more than 99.8% of the product was negative" for beetle contamination, Brotz said. She noted that liquid forms of Similac have not been affected or recalled.

1. The liquid forms are unaffected? Why not? The beetles are all dissolved?
Yuck!

5. The beetles go after dry goods...
...oatmeal, flour, corn meal, etc... A few years ago, I went to open my bag of flour to make some bread and found it full of small flour beetles, upon further checking I found them to be in my oatmeal and granola in my cupboard. Needless to say, I did an internet search on the offenders and totally cleaned and wiped out my cupboard, tossed the infested dry goods and keep them wrapped in plastic, either in containers or in bags. I have not had a repeat occurrence.

I am supposing that the beetles got into the powders after the liquid formulas were processed, or the powder that the liquid formulas were made from were part of the "99.8%" that was unaffected by the beetles.

7. They are even in things like bird and catfood
had a hell of a time trying to find out where the little buggers were. Believe it or not the main infestation was in my birdcage paper (the kind with the gravel glued to it). I figure they like the glue.

10. Apparently they love glue
I get my expertise from watching "Billy the Exterminator". LMAO. Apparently mobile homes are magnets for cockroaches because the roaches love eating all the glue in all the pressed board products mobile homes are made with. The stupid shit my brain retains.

13. That other products were not affected makes me suspect the ingredients of the formula.
And I would like to know where Abbott gets these materials from. Could they have been supplied to other formula manufacturers?
