Cuba wins N.Y. court cigar fight
(Originally published on March 30, 2004)

Cuba's state tobacco company won an order blocking General Cigar from selling cigars in the U.S. under the Cohiba brand favored by Fidel Castro.

Manhattan Federal Judge Robert Sweet ruled General Cigar didn't own the rights to the brand and violated the trademark.

Havana-based Cubatabaco exports Cohibas worldwide except to the U.S., where an embargo blocks imports.

General Cigar has been making Cohibas in the Dominican Republic for more than a decade and selling them in the U.S since 1992 for as much as $20 apiece.
