Zemoc Industries recalling 380,000 pounds of Lunch Meat in Sandwiches sold at Walmart (Listeria)
Source: Best Syndication News

On August, 23, 2010, a recall was announced for 380,000 pounds of deli lunch meat that may have been contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The deli meat involved in this recall were distributed to Walmart delicatessens that made them into sandwiches. The deli meat was distributed nationwide at their deli section under the 'Marketside Grab and Go Sandwiches' brand name.

Walmart announced that they have immediately pulled the recalled sandwiches and supermarket deli sandwich meat from their store shelves. Not all deli meat has been recalled and some sandwiches are ok to eat because of the sell by date. Chances are the contaminated foods have been pulled off of the shelves. However, Walmart says that if you have recently purchased the items involved in the recall you should return it for a full refund.

. . .

the meat products production dates ranges June 18 to July 2, 2010. The “Use By” date spans August 20 to September 10, 2010.

. . .

Listeria monocytogenes is an uncommon illness but if infection occurs it could be potentially deadly. Most healthy individuals never get sick with listeriosis. If a listeriosis infection occurs symptoms such as a high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea can happen.

What do you know, a recall that actually came out before the use-by date expired.

The link has lot numbers of contaminated meat.

1. Walmart = Arkansas. Zemoc = Tyson = Arkansas.
Close relationship.

Don't. Shop. At. Walmart. Stop supporting child abuse, poor working conditions, and imports.

Change begins one person at a time. Make the change, just say no to Walmart.

15. Coated with Caramel Color??
From the article:

Deli Meat Recall List August 23, 2010:
# "Marketside Grab and Go Sandwiches BLACK FOREST HAM With Natural Juices Coated with Caramel Color" packed in 25.5-pound cases and has the number 17800 1300.
# "Marketside Grab and Go Sandwiches HOT HAM, HARD SALAMI, PEPPERONI, SANDWICH PEPPERS" packed in 28.49-pound cases and has the number 17803 1300.
# "Marketside Grab and Go Sandwiches VIRGINIA BRAND HAM With Natural Juices, MADE IN NEW YORK, FULLY COOKED BACON, SANDWICH PICKLES, SANDWICH PEPPERS" packed in 32.67-pound cases and has the number 17804 1300.
# "Marketside Grab and Go Sandwiches ANGUS ROAST BEEF Coated with Caramel Color" packed in 25.5-pound cases and has the number 17805 1300.

Why on the diety's blue planet does anyone put caramel color on meats?

I don't know whether Zemoc has any connections to Arkansas, but the items being recalled were all produced in Buffalo, NY - which at least makes the "made in New York fully cooked bacon" at least partially accurate.

37. It is common
on commercially produced beef products and has for years. Even home cooks have been encouraged to use caramel color, "Kitchen Bouquet" is caramel color. Deli roast beef isn't really that color, it is more of a gray color..."Black Forest" ham implies a dark brown exterior and a sweet flavor...nasty

38. It does sound like a Wal-Mart exclusive item, undoubtedly
packaged to their exact specifications. Wal-Mart doesn't manufacture anything do they? Exclusive merchandise absolutely makes that merchandise as much a "Wal-Mart product" as is possible...so I beg to differ, I believe it is a Wal-Mart product.

40. No it is NOT a walmart exclusive. I worked for the deli at walmart, kroger and
meijer. They got their products from the exact same place for the most part. This was NOT a walmart fuck-up, I would be 99.9% willing to say that. I worked there and was amazed at how stringent they are with their rules on cleaning and food safety in comparison to the other two.
You "believe" it was a walmart product, you go on your own assumptions and we know what they say about that now don't we. I go on fact, but don't let that stop your hate-fest.

41. Oh, no
I wasn't saying this was a Wal-Mart's problem beyond it being served at Wal-Mart. It definitely sounds like Tyson's company is to blame. I am not a Wal-Mart hater. This particular item sounds that it is produced exclusively for Wal-Mart, to Wal-Mart specifications, but the actual food poisoning issue doesn't appear to be caused by Wal-Mart...I never intended to imply that at all.

6. Notice the article doesn't say what causes Listeria monocytogenes?
Here is this information, though:

Control
Effective control of L. monocytogenes requires prevention of contamination (to the extent possible) and prevention of growth through time/temperature or formulation control. Knowledge of potential harborage sites is important, as contamination is more likely to occur when the organism has become established in a niche. Food processing plant surveys have found Listeria in the following locations (listed approximately in the order of prevalence):
floors
drains
coolers
cleaning aids such as brushes, sponges, etc.
product and/or equipment wash areas
food contact surfaces
condensate
walls and ceilings
compressed air

Control of Listeria relies on detecting and managing harborage sites with thorough and frequent cleaning. This includes daily cleaning of floors and drains, and adequate attention to less frequently cleaned areas such as HVAC systems, walls, coolers and freezers. Also, damaged equipment, cracks, crevices and hollow areas must be part of sanitation and inspection schedules. It is essential to avoid creation of aerosols during cleaning, especially of floors and drains, to avoid spread of contaminants.

13. Talk about filth--Another article today "Typhoid in the Frozen Fruit Aisle"
You probably aren’t a huge consumer of frozen mamey fruit pulp. Mamey is a sweet tropical fruit grown in South and Central America; here, it’s primarily sold peeled, mashed and frozen, often for use in smoothies. The product is sold under the La Nuestra and Goya brands and has been recalled (voluntarily, of course, the FDA has no such powers). (You may also find it in use at juice stands.)

Compared to the egg recall, this is small news: there may be seven people hospitalized with Typhoid (three in California, four in Nevada) but mamey pulp is a product with a fairly limited market. Unlike eggs, most of us aren’t going to need to run and check the freezer. But even if you’ve never heard of a mamey, let alone considered pulping one, this is news worth noting. Typhoid? Typhoid, in the freezer aisle? Any chance that will be popping up among the frozen strawberries next year?

Well, it never has. There have been three other typhoid outbreaks in the US in the last 12 years, one linked to Gulf Oysters (not eating many of those at the moment anyway–gee, thanks BP? who knew you were really looking out for us?), one to a specific restaurant employee, and another to more mamey fruit (a fruit I am now officially unlikely to ever try). But typhoid finds its way to us via the Salmonella typhi bacteria, found commonly on the hands of a typhoid carrier who’s just been to the bathroom and has failed to wash his or her hands properly. Yum…that infamous fecal bacteria gets you every time.

http://blogs.babble.com/strollerderby/2010/08/24/fruit-pulp-recall/

There is so much filth these days on our food that it should have its own line item on the list of nutrition ingredients label.

16. Tyson Recalls 172 Tons of Meat Sold to Wal-Mart That May Be Contaminated
Source: Bloomberg

A Tyson Foods Inc. unit is recalling about 380,000 pounds (172 metric tons) of deli meat distributed to Wal-Mart Stores Inc., because the meat may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

Zemco Industries, a unit of Tyson, produced the meat from June 18 to July 2, and packages have “Use By” dates ranging from Aug. 20 to Sept. 10, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service said on its website. Wal-Mart was the only company that received the meat, Tyson spokesman Gary Mickelson said. The meat was shipped nationwide, and no illnesses have been reported, the USDA said.

“The recall is being conducted as a precaution,” Mickelson said today in an interview. None of the meat was sold in individual packages or separately at the deli counter, he said.

The meat was used in some “Marketside Grab and Go” deli sandwiches and stores have been instructed to remove affected products from the shelves, Wal-Mart said in a statement. Customers can return the products for a refund, the company said. Tyson is the largest U.S. meat processor.

27. Look, Wal-Mart demands of its vendors to give them low prices
Edited on Tue Aug-24-10 07:11 PM by notadmblnd
Tell me why (when the vendor is only making pennies off selling its product) the vendors wouldn't give Wal-Mart a lesser quality product? I can't speak for everyone, but the few times I've gone there- it's been my experience that much of what Wal-Mart sells is very low quality.

Yo boss! here's a batch that could be contaminated, what should we do with it? Set it on the side over there by the stuff shipping to Wal-Mart.

Wal-Mart's not going to lose any customers over it, They're not gonna lose a dime.

31. "Tell me why the vendors wouldn't give Wal-Mart a lesser quality product? "
"(when the vendor is only making pennies off selling its product)".

Because they don't want to lose the Wal Mart account. Even if the profit margin is small, the sheer volume of the Wal Mart account means sizable profits in actual dollars made. Not a good idea to lose an account of that size if you want to stay in business.

39. Look I worked in the deli at walmart and I know how stringent they were there. I don't
know how they were at tyson. I also worked at kroger and meijer deli and they get their products from the exact same place. So no I do not believe, scratch that, I KNOW this was not a walmart fuck-up. I was amazed at the difference in the attitudes toward cleanliness and food safety between not only walmart and kroger but also meijers. IF I buy deli food it will be from walmart before either of the other two. This is from someone who was behind the scene at all three.

Fact: did you know at the end of the work day walmart throws ALL left overs away, while the other two keep them to start the next day with?
Something to think about:shrug: If you would like to know some other behind the scenes "scoops", ask, I'll tell you.

23. Private label milk sold t McDonalds, Burger King, WINCO, & COSTCP
Look at www.nextrevolution.net & you can see what Idaho republicans Jim Risch, Gov Butch Otter, Dem Walt Minnick, & NE Mike Johanns covered up in Idaho.

Darigold, sicth largest dairy in the nation, sent out a letter asking for information into theft, fraud, & waste, no retaliation stipulated, two of us answered, the first guy was ofund out & harassed, quit in three months, & I was harassed for a year & a hald before I was fired.

Pictures can be seen on Nextrev along with the letter. I also reported kickbacks in transportation in the highoy subsidized dairy industry but republcians refused to look into it.

Gov Butch Otter has more scams going on in the state than most polticians in DC. The Idaho tax comission had a whistleblower come forward, report out of state corporation were let off for millions, Otter appointee & republcian legislature found nothing. Now three more former tax comission employees have come forward & backed yp Stan Howland.

Idaho has had several school teachers all over the state arrested for molesting school kids, a Boise police officer refitred one day, turned himself in the next for molesting school kids & he was a bicycle officer patrolling schools. Four charges were dropped & he'll be out of jail in a year & a half.

Idaho is so hillbilly backwards the conned servatives like taking it that way.

25. This is what happens when one company produces so much of our food.
The real culprit here is the loss of smaller operations, replaced by enormous single-owner factory farms. Why is one single plant producing 190 tons of food?

The same thing with the eggs. One guy provides millions of (contaminated) eggs?

With such a system, a "single point of failure" can sicken the entire country. It would be far better to have production spread out among hundreds or thousands of smaller, more local operations. The waste from such small operations wouldn't overwhelm waterways either, the way the enormous factory farms literally dump rivers of untreated sewage on local water sources.
