Police: 2 officers, 3 other people shot in NYC
Source: AP

Police say two officers and two civilians were wounded and another person was killed in an exchange of gunfire in upper Manhattan.

NYPD spokesman Sgt. Carlos Nieves says the most seriously hurt officer was shot early Sunday in his protective vest covering his chest and was hospitalized in stable condition. The other officer was being treated for a graze wound to the hand.

The two other people have been hospitalized for gunshot wounds but their conditions weren't available. It's unclear whether any of the shooting victims are suspects.

Nieves says he is awaiting details on what led to the gunfire near 144th Street and Lenox Avenue and it's not clear whether it came during a confrontation between the officers and the three.

He says a gun was found at the scene.

1. "2 officers, 3 other people..;"
Is this a comment on the recent, and decades long, list of police brutality? Or it this a way to again place certain professions above the average US citizen.

If the title had read, "2 officers, 3 civilians shot in NYC then I would have totally understood what the hell was going on. Even the word count would be less this way.

Just saying.

2. Two officers, two civilians, and one other person
Sounds like the "other person" was neither an officer nor a civilian.

I'm afraid I have to Unrec this for poor writing at the source.

4. I'm not sure how I would have written it, because it's not completely clear to me what happened
Kind of off topic, but I don't really like calling people "civilians" when contrasting them with police officers. As far as I'm concerned, a police officer is a civilian who is employed by government to enforce laws. The only non-civilians I recognize are members of our military forces.

6. But police officers ARE civilians, too
unless they are in one of the armed services.

:hi:

Of course, they do love their black ninja swat soldier clothes

5. From the AP a better report
NEW YORK – An argument at a block party escalated into an exchange of gunfire early Sunday, authorities said, killing one man and wounding four, including two police officers.

Two men began arguing around 3 a.m. in upper Manhattan, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said. He said one of the men fatally shot the other, then fired at the five police officers who had arrived at the scene. Four of the officers fired back, wounding the man, Kelly said. He was hospitalized. Two of the officers were shot. One officer, Michael Tedeschi, was hit in the chest but was wearing a bullet-resistant vest. The other officer, Alfredo Vargas, was grazed in the hand. Both are expected to be fine, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.

Two other people were hospitalized for gunshot wounds but their conditions weren't available. Two other police officers were hurt, though not seriously. Police had cordoned off the area with yellow tape and residents out and about later Sunday stopped to take a look before going on their way.

"Nothing like this has happened here in years. It's very unusual," said James White, a yoga instructor who lives in the area.
