President Obama: Republicans holding small businesses "hostage"
Source: Reuters

President Barack Obama on Saturday accused Republicans of holding American small businesses "hostage to politics" after Republican senators refused to back a $30 billion small-business lending package.

Senate Republicans blocked the package on Thursday, dealing a fresh blow to Obama's efforts to show Americans, in the midst of a tough election year, that his administration is focused on tackling stubbornly high unemployment.

"I'm calling on the Republican leaders in the Senate to stop holding America's small businesses hostage to politics, and allow an up-or-down vote on this small business jobs bill," Obama said in his weekly radio and Internet address.

"Understand, a majority of senators support the plan. It's just that the Republican leaders in the Senate won't even allow it to come up for a vote," he said.

3. They're doing it to crush the economy before the election, and..
to help eliminate competition with their big corporate masters.

4. What's sad is that, despite the fact that Democrats
are always better for small business when you look at the actual numbers, most small businessmen fall for Republican propaganda. They all seem to think they're going to become General Dynamics next week or something.

Anyway, $30 bil is peanuts compared to what the big guys got--whether that's 30 bil in loans or 30 bil in unemployment benefits--but whether it's 30 bil or 300 bil expended on small business, Obama isn't going to buy many votes with it because "everyone knows" that Dems are bad for business.

Aaargh.

11. Yes - it is far too narrowly focused
And does nothing to address the real issues why small business is sitting on the sidelines.

9. Doesn't this article support the fact that Repubs are just playing political games?
Step 1- bill is proposed
step 2- no one talks about it
step 3- Repubs block it
step 4- step is declared a WIN
step 5- step 1 is ignored and everyone talks about step 4 and the reaction to step 4

this country is in a bubble.

10. What makes Republicans stand out as hypocrites
Edited on Sat Jul-31-10 07:48 PM by ProSense
is they're pushing the argument that ending Bush's tax cut for the rich will hurt small businesses, which is bogus.

12. Call their bluff and let them introduce the amendments they want.
Just take away their "reason" for blocking it and paint them into a corner.
