Tennessee Republican floats secession threat
Source: CNN

Texas Gov. Rick Perry's suggestion in April 2009 that his state might consider secession drew a round of mockery nationwide, but his blustery populist rhetoric earned him serious traction among GOP primary voters in his re-election fight against Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison.

Perry, riding a tide of anti-Washington sentiment, went on to trounce Hutchison and another candidate in the Republican primary earlier this year.

Now another gubernatorial hopeful is test-driving a similar message.

Rep. Zach Wamp, one of three candidates seeking the GOP gubernatorial nomination in Tennessee, told Hotline OnCall that Perry had the right idea. Wamp argued that mandates forced on the states by the Obama administration's health care bill have put secession on the table.

"I hope that the American people will go to the ballot box in 2010 and 2012 so that states are not forced to consider separation from this government," Wamp told Hotline OnCall Friday.

64. Alan Jay Lerner wrote it best!
Eliza (singing):
What a fool I was, what dominated fool,
to think that you were the earth and the sky,
What a fool I was, What an elevated fool,
What a mutton-headed dote was I!
No, my reverberated friend,
you are not the beginning and the end.

Professor Higgins (speaking):
You impetant hussy there's not an idea in your head or a word in your mouth that I haven't put there.

Eliza (singing):
There'll be spring every year without you. England still will be here without you.
There'll be fruit on the tree.
And a shore by the sea.
There'll be crumpets and tea without you.

Art and music will thrive without you.
Somehow Keats will survive without you.
And there still will be rain on that plain down in Spain,
even that will remain without you.
I can do without you.

You, dear friend, who taught so well,
You can go to Hartford, Hereford and Hampshire.

They can still rule with land without you.
Windsor Castle will stand without you.
And without much ado we can all muddle through without you.

Professor Higgins:
You brazen hussy,

Eliza (singing):
Wihtout pulling it the tide comes in,
without your twirling it the Earth can spin,
Without your pulling it, the tide comes in
Without your twirling it, the earth can spin
Without your pushing them, the clouds roll by,
If they can do without you, ducky, so can I
I shall not feel alone without you
I can stand on my own without you
So go back in your shell
I can do bloody well
Without...

Professor Higging (singing) interupts:
By George, I really did it,
I did it, I did it,
I said I'd make a woman and indeed I did,
I knew that I could do it,
I knew it, I knew it,
I said I'd make a woman and succeed I did!

(speaking)
Eliza you are wonderful

2. How very "Jefferson Davis" of him.
So, if they don't get what they want, they'll just secede? I wonder how well that would actually go over with the vast majority of the public in Tennessee and Texas?

55. Houston here.....
Perry is an embarrassing ass. He has never won the majority of the vote in TX (Gov only needs plurality).

Bill White, the former mayor of Houston, has an excellent chance of ridding us of Guv Dummy Goodhair this fall.

Not to mention, all our major cities are BLUE.

68. The vast majority of the public would drag these assholes out of their state capitols and lynch them
Because the vast majority of the public would really prefer not to be caught up in a war zone.

(What, like the government's just going to let them go? That's didn't happen in the 1860s, it won't happen now.)

33. Plus...
... they'd feel a little sheepish once they found out that the US wouldn't let any Tennessean goods or people pass through their borders or allow Tennessean planes to fly over US airspace, and that North Korea and Iran were the only countries to recognize their new country.

40. Plus, they all get more federal money than they put in.
Tennessee gets $1.27 back for every dollar they pay. The only reliably red state that pays even a little more than it gets back is Texas, which, as noted elsewhere in this thread, is changing, as is North Carolina.

The blue states would swim: the red states would sink.

start referring to the Civil War as Lincoln's Folly, much as purchase of Alaska was originally referred to as "Seward's Folly."

We the people here in the south that did not vote for those nuts jobs are embarrassed by them.
And don't forget Texas is on its way of becoming a BLUE state.
Over 3.5 MILLION Texans voted for Obama in 2008.
Obama won all the major big cities/counties here in Texas (Dallas, Houston, Austin, El Paso, San Antonio, etc) -- the ONLY major city McCain won was Ft. Worth and Plano.

I truly wish people would stop the South bashing ;)

30. Take it in stride.
The reality of it is this: the conservanazi teabaggin' kkkluckers like to make rash statements like "secede". The real reality of it is that these idiots who believe that crap can't counter the argument that they couldn't afford to secede. ESPECIALLY TEXAS...... like where's the money to replace Ft. Hood, Ft. Sam, Ft. Bliss, Randolf, Kelly and Lackland AFB. Any state that would secede couldn't afford to defend it's own borders. Of course, the conservanazi teabaggin' kkkluckers can't figure it out.

I tell my idiot relatives that proclaim "secede" to push their conservanazi republiklan politicians to keep pushing the issue. Makes 'em look dumber every time they bring it up.

It's the old "states' rights" thing. They can't seem to remember who lost that war.

6. just another extra-judicial republican
Winning in a fair election is a nice idea to Republicans, but not strictly necessary.

Sharron Angle: I hope people vote for me so we don't have to murder Harry Reid with a gun.
Zach Wamp: I hope people vote for me so we don't have to secede from the union, leaving us literally surrounded by the world's largest military, and country music as our chief export (but that's beside the point).

63. The Civil War/The War Between the States/The War of Northern Aggression
(as it is called by various groups) was a mistake. America should have let the Confederacy go.

The only good to come from it was Abolition, and slavery would have, eventually, collapsed on its own.

Unclear how The Great Nation of Tennessee would compete in the world economy - but it would be interesting to watch.

I wonder which states would join the new confederacy: Texas (doubtful, in spite of our idiot governor's statement), Florida (most unlikely), Virginia or the Carolinas (don't see that), perhaps Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas would seem the most likely - but they all have such large black populations that it is difficult to believe that those blacks would sign themselves up to live in an even more racist society than they do now?

21. Once upon a time, Zach, the GOP was the proud party of national unity and antislavery:
Johnny Reb wanted to tear the country apart to keep black folk in chains, and the GOP said NO!

It was an ugly time. Maybe you ought to stroll around your state and think about it a bit: go to Bean's Station and Blountsville and Blue Springs and Brentwood and Bull's Gap and Campbell's Station and Chattanooga and Collierville and Columbia and Dandridge and Dover and Fair Garden and Fort Donelson and Fort Henry and Fort Pillow and Fort Sanders and Franklin and Hartsville and Hatchie's Bridge and Hoover's Gap and Jackson and Johnsonville and Memphis and Mossy Creek and Murfreesborough and Nashville and Parker's Cross Roads and Shiloh and Spring Hill and Stones River and Thompson's Station and Vaught's Hill and Wauhatchie -- and think about all the folk who died there

I understand you racists are upset that America today has a President with skin darker than yours, but deep in my heart I do believe you can overcome your anxiety and prejudice

But let's get this straight, Zach: we won't let you folk tear America apart nowadays anymore than our good ancestors let Johnny Reb tear America apart a hundred fifty years ago. It's just not going to happen. You'll get your wamp handed to you on a plate in short order

47. I will never figure out as to why when some dumb ass politician makes an asinine statement,
some people claiming to be his/her opponent empower said dumb ass by trashing the entire state or region?

If anything comments such as let the whole state or region leave only serves to strengthen the lunatic's political position.

Why is it so difficult to attack a single politician without attacking millions of innocent people in the process?

Thanks for the thread, RamboLiberal.

Just on that basis alone, he ought to be disregarded.....

49. The tenor of the political ads in TN is the nastiest I've ever seen or heard: every use of the term
"liberal" might just as well have been preceded with "filthy slim-ball" considering the seething derision, enmity, and scorn present in the voice inflections alone.

50. wow! isn't that rather un-American and treasonous?
These folks need to get over their cheap selves and leave America to "real Americans."

51. k*r Here's how it plays out
Somebody will get really serious about this and start a little movement in one of these states, probably Texas and there will be a high profile poll done on the attitude of the rest of the country.
The response will be about 70% let 'em go, fuck 'em to 30% no, please stay. That will end it. The majority in whichever state is singled out will be furious and we'll see a major change it this type of stupidity. Sure, Tennessee is going it on it's own. Shut down TVA, remove all federal assistance and you'll have to ask the last person out to shut off the lights. It's pathetic and should be challenged.

53. Let Those Morons Secede
I say if they want to Secede then go for it. The Federal Government would then save billions of dollars by not having these A$$backwards states sucking on the Governments Teets anymore. We'll see how long they last and come crawling back. That's when we'll say F U and kick them away.

57. What, straight to secession without a shot at nullification first?
I mean, if you're gonna' be a moron you might as well harken back to the original.

65. It would be interesting to see one of these idiots actually try to get secession to happen instead
of just talking about it. It wouldn't take long for them to look like a huge asshole (and not just a regular asshole)after everyone sees what would be involved in it. Then maybe they'd quit with the idiot talk.

66. Why can't all conservatives just secede? They can have their own country and we can have ours!
Okay, wishful thinking...

73. Why don't all the secessionists go to one state and take that place over?
I recommend Utah. I'm willing to bet the rest of us would freely give Utah to the racists, fascists, zealots and sexual deviants, and never look back. It's not as if they don't own the place, already.
