BP has paid less than 12 percent of claims
Source: AP

WASHINGTON (AP) - The House Judiciary Committee says data it has
collected shows that BP has paid less than 12 percent of claims
submitted by people and businesses arising from the Gulf oil spill.

The committee said in a statement Friday that only $71 million
out of an estimated $600 million had been paid as of Tuesday. In
addition, the panel said that BP didn't make any payments in the
first two weeks following the explosion and oil spill.

Michigan Democratic Rep. John Conyers said he's concerned that
BP "is stiffing too many victims and shortchanging others."

The committee said BP hasn't made a single payment for bodily
injury or diminished home property value. BP officials did not
immediately respond to a request for comment.

The contractor BP hired is doing exactly what it said it would do for BP. Pay as little as possible.

1. it gives me the creeps
>>The software, developed by officials charged with scrutinizing Obama's stimulus plan, was demonstrated for reporters by OMB Director Peter Orszag. A slide show portrayed auditors using it to discover that a number of contractors and subcontractors scheduled for payment by the government were in fact located in a single home. Plus, a satellite photo showed the home had a pool and a boat. "Suspicious," Orszag said. :scared:

Don't Pay Dead People

An interesting article.

Thanks. I would have missed seeing it.

Also in that article is a little paragraph Also planned for inclusion: contractors who've fallen behind in their payments or, even worse, landed in jail, and companies that have been suspended or otherwise deemed ineligible for government work.

If that part really does get added in, Halliburton will have a hard time getting paid.

2. That makes it doubly important that President Obama forced
BP to pony up the $20B.

3. has that money made its way into an escrow account yet?
after the first 2 qtr's deposits are made, are you going to be surprised when BP challenges the requirement of addional payments?

6. But that doesn't mean
claims will be settled faster especially in nebulous areas like diminished home value.

7. Any American wants a check from BP should be able to get a check from BP
I'm not terribly interested in technicalities like what is deemed "legitimate".
