The intention was to work through "associates" of the two stars to lure the Kennedys, as well as Peter Lawford, their British actor brother-in-law and fellow member of Sinatra's "rat pack", into actions they would regret.

Papers released in the US yesterday contained reports of a rumour from an informant suggesting elements of the mob wanted smear the men.

An FBI statement accompanying the released of the papers said: "{The file} contains report of a rumour from an informant suggesting that elements of the Mafia wanted attack the character of Edward and Robert Kennedy and their brother-in-law Peter Lawford by working through associates of Frank Sinatra to compromise them at a New York party. Both Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe were to be involved."

After looking into the claims, the FBI is said to have decided the information was not "solid" enough and no other mention of it appears.

7. Apparently Hoover didn't hate or at the very least wasn't too worried about the Mafia.

Response to Mafia and civil rights groups

In the 1950s, evidence of Hoover's unwillingness to focus FBI resources on the Mafia became grist for the media and his many detractors, after famed reporter Jack Anderson exposed the immense scope of the Mafia's organized crime network, a huge threat Hoover had long downplayed. Hoover's retaliation and continual harassment of Anderson lasted into the 1970s. His moves against people who maintained contacts with subversive elements, some of whom were members of the civil rights movement, also led to accusations of trying to undermine their reputations. The treatment of Martin Luther King, Jr. and actress Jean Seberg are two cited examples.

Hoover personally directed the FBI investigation into the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The House Select Committee on Assassinations issued a report in 1979 critical of the performance by the FBI, the Warren Commission as well as other agencies. The report also criticized what it characterized as the FBI's reluctance to thoroughly investigate the possibility of a conspiracy to assassinate the president.<19>

11. I've never seen his Wikipedia, Uncle Joe. Good grief! If he could be resurrected,
then shown his Wiki, he just might have a heart attack!

What an abominable, hideous person, and he was in charge of this country's own F.B.I. for all those years, had so much power at his disposal. Surely we could have done better than that, or have we simply been naive?

Thank you.

the second term?

Sigh.

15. Bush, W** raided the late Jack Anderson's home. Anyone remember?
Came out of the blue.

The connection between the mafia, JFK assassination, and the Bush Republicans needed to DISAPPEAR.

Got to Marilyn anyway didn't they. She was supposed to have a big press conference the morning she was found dead. I guess she did, but not the way she thought.

17. What are you implying and where did you get that bogus info about a big press conference?
Edited on Tue Jun-15-10 07:54 AM by No Elephants
No "big press conference" was scheduled.

Members of the RW "smear the Kennedys" machine are not worth spit.

4. I think the Kennedys didn't need any help in putting themselves in compromising positions
with either Sinatra or Marilyn.

9. True -- and right wing is still trying to smear them . . . !!!
Only because the trio -- John, Bobby, Ted were all admired by the public

for reasons the right wing wants to bury!
