Bush, at Medicare Birthday, Asks Again for Drug Benefits

President Bush paid tribute today to Lyndon B. Johnson as the father of Medicare, saying he wanted to build on Johnson's legacy by signing a bill to add prescription drug benefits to Medicare this year.

"My pen is ready," Mr. Bush said at a ceremony for the 38th anniversary of the Medicare law.

House and Senate negotiators are now trying to work out differences in bills that they have passed to provide drug coverage under Medicare. ---
