ADVFN NewsNOAA Expands Area Closed To Fishing To Nearly 26% Of US Waters In Gulf
DOW JONES NEWSWIRES
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on Monday expanded the area of the Gulf of Mexico that is closed to fishing as a giant oil sheen continued spreading from the site of an explosion and sinking of an offshore rig in April.
All commercial and recreational fishing is now closed across nearly 62,000 square miles, or nearly 26% of federal waters in the Gulf, up from about 60,600 square miles closed on Friday, NOAA said.
NOAA has banned fishing in these areas to ensure that seafood from the Gulf will remain safe for consumers. It is working with the Food and Drug Administration to implement a broad seafood sampling plan, which includes sampling seafood from inside and outside the closure area and dockside and market-based sampling.
The agency said it will continue to evaluate the need for fishing closures and will reopen closed areas as appropriate.
