SC Gov. Sanford saw Argentine lover in Florida
Source: AP

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford said Wednesday he spent last weekend in Florida with his Argentine lover, hoping to rekindle the affair that wrecked his marriage and his political future and brought a formal rebuke from legislators for embarrassing the state.

At a news conference on an unrelated issue, Sanford conceded he owes the public the assurance that he's safe and in communication with his office but said the media is obsessed with his personal life.

Sanford did not mention Maria Belen Chapur of Argentina by name when asked about a weekend trip out of state about which his staff has refused to provide details. But the governor, now divorced, left no room for doubt.

"As a matter of record, everybody in this room knows exactly who I was with over the weekend," Sanford said. "That is no mystery to anybody given what I said last summer. And, you know, the purpose was obviously to see if something could be restarted on that front given the rather enormous geographic gulf between us. And time will tell. I don't know if it will or won't."

11. Apparently, his Lt. Gov. is even more undesirable than is Sanford.
Word to Govenors who get to choose their own Lt. Governors.

12. That particular old philanderer does not seem to think so.
But, it's not about sex. She's is soul mate (said the seemingly soul-less Governor).

13. After the letters that he had written to her were revealed
it sounded very much like a man in love. Looking at Sanford you wouldn't believe there was much of a romantic there but it appears so. And really, those of you that have seen and heard his wife could you imagine being married to her? I surely couldn't. I hope the two of them have a happy life together after he leaves office. That said, he should have resigned when this blew up last summer and he forgot his official duties to run off to Argentina.

15. He sounded to me like a man who was out of control and out of reality. Then again,

love sometimes feels like that.

I have indeed seen and heard his wife. And I've also seen and heard him, comparing himself to King David and believing God has chosen him to be wealthy (if only because he married well) and to rule. Neither of them appeals to me, and, of the two, but that is hardly the point, is it?

As far as your not being able to imagine being married to his wife, maybe that's why you never CHOSE to propose to her and have children with her. He did. I'm sure she's come across men who looked and sounded better than Gov. Sanford, but she still didn't cheat on him or deeply humiliate him and their children publicly.

As far as his resigning, word is, no one wants his Lt. Governor in office.

14. Let me try to understand: When Sanford was married, Chapur's being in Argentina
was no problem. Now that he is divorced, there is a huge geographic gulf between them that is interfering with their relationship?

Sanford's (very wealthy) wife claimed he was insanely cheap. Could it be, now that neither South Carolina or the former Mrs. Sanford will be funding the trips, Sanford and his bank account are re-thinking a long distance relationship?

BTW, he is assuring SC citizens that Florida is paying for his security, not SC. Sanford says he owes SC that. But, why is it fair for Florida's citizens to pay for the Governorn of SC's security while he works on his love life?

Will that come back to bite Crist in the primary?

17. Not sure why Ms. Chapur would continue an involvement with a man
who seems to be incapable of being discreet, but it's her life.

22. How did he get divorced so quickly?
Here in Virginia, you have to be legally separated for one year before you can even begin the divorce proceedings.
