Gov. Brewer signs bill targeting ethnic studies
Source: KOLD News 13

PHOENIX (KOLD) - Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has signed a bill targeting an ethnic studies program in a Tucson school district.

State schools chief Tom Horne, a Republican running for Attorney General, says the district's ethnic studies program promotes "ethnic chauvinism" and racial resentment toward whites.

The measure prohibits classes that advocate ethnic solidarity, that are designed primarily for students of a particular race or that promote resentment toward a certain ethnic group.

The Tucson Unified School District denies its program promotes resentment.

3. But Brewer is concerned with only those ethnic studies that could promote...
...resentment of whites. These courses are also known as the truth.

9. I'd like to focus on the corruption of corporate run government
instead of broad brushing Caucasians.

Making White people a boogie man isn't helpful. So we don't have to imply that White people are bad and others are not.

I disagree with what Governor Brewer says and does.

But i won't jump on the "Let's hate White people" bandwagon just to oppose her.

12. How absurd of you to imply that my post suggests jumping on a "Hate the Whites" bandwagon.
But shooting the messenger doesn't change the fact that the true story of the United States can't be told without discussing the genocidal brutality of white Europeans against the indigenous people of the New World.

18. I'm not saying you did
but someone could infer you were doing that. It's another "slippery slope" and we need to be careful not to blame White people. Either intentionally or not.

In the past the main slaves of capitalism were people of color or ethnic/religious groups out of favor among the power elites. Non whites became the scapegoats. And still true in some areas though less so.

These days Michael Steele is singing the praises for the bastards. Ditto Clarence Thomas and Condoleeza Rice.

If we looked farther we'd find true bastards of all stripes.

I'm just sayin; be careful.

that enjoy white privilege as Brewer does and that rallies hatred against other groups as she is doing.

It really can't work both ways because there is a power differential.

It's not that white people are evil. It's that evil people like Brewer and her Klan have sold a portion of the white majority on their inherent superiority and that sale sends out tentacles all over our culture.

26. I'm not exactly proud of the shit some of my ancestors did, but remarks like that don't help.
Key word there: Ancestors. Most of the folks responsible for the modern world's ethnic power/privilege differentials are long since dead.

What Brewer's doing here is squashing ethnic studies courses as a way to hold onto power and privilege. Period. "Promoting resentment" is just a convenient excuse. But making wise-ass remarks like that plays right into the hands of the idiots who'll lap up Brewer's bullshit excuse, because they'll leap on anything that reinforces their prejudices.

"See! See! Ethnic studies groups DO promote resentment!"

The trick to dealing with these pricks is, don't give them anything they can latch onto, but also be firm and stand up for yourself. (Yeah, easier said than done, I know.)

25. Desalination baby!!
Time to get busy on that.. Long past time actually.. Lots of rain out there falling "uselessly" on the oceans. Let's collect it, and pump it inland.

Oh no! Imagine if one of the pumping stations blows up and spills all that fresh water into the bay!

Believe it or not, that actually would be a legitimate issue, along with the truly massive climate change that "greening of the deserts" would bring upon us. Water vapor is the most potent greenhouse gas there is, above methane, CO2, all that..

13. Yep, this disturbing fascist undertow is running strong in this country.
Some of the redneck conservative jerks I have to work with on a daily basis are always talking about how the [insert racial slur}s should all be rounded up and deported or executed, and we should have the military shoot people that cross the border. Real 3rd Reich Gestapo shit.

Edited on Tue May-11-10 09:28 PM by whereaminow
Now if they want to apply regulations against ethnic solidarity, they'd better do the same against national chauvinism and solidarity. A much more dangerous thing.

16. Jan Brewer's thinking is about as deep as a teaspoon.
We have from her a law targeting "illegal Immigrants" but no one knows what an illegal immigrant looks like... who will decide that?

Now we have a bill prohibiting classes that "advocate ethnic solidarity, that are designed primarily for students of a particular race or that promote resentment toward a certain ethnic group." Just as vague. Who determines that? Doesn't this very law advocate ethnic solidarity, is designed primarily for students of a particular race and promotes resentment toward a certain ethnic group?

What a hick she is! A bigoted hick. So unqualified for public office!

Or will she just start ranting "One Arizona! One people! One Brewer!"
