Cuccinelli tells U.Va. to hand over documents on climate change
Source: Richmond Times-Dispatch

Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli is demanding that the University of Virginia turn over a broad range of documents from a former professor to determine whether he defrauded taxpayers as he sought grants for global-warming research.

The civil investigative demand asks for all data and materials presented by former professor Michael Mann when he applied for five research grants from the university. It also gives the school until May 27 to produce all correspondence or e-mails between Mann and 39 other scientists since 1999.

Mann’s work has been repeatedly targeted by global-warming skeptics, particularly after an e-mail from him referring to a statistical “trick” he used in his research surfaced in leaked e-mails from the University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit.

“I think he’s simply trying to smear me as part of a larger campaign to discredit my science,” said Mann, who left U.Va. the University of Virginia in 2005.
Rachel Levinson, senior counsel with the American Association of University Professors, said Cuccinelli’s request had “echoes of McCarthyism.”

1. I really do not understand the Republican logic of denying climate change.
They would rather discredit the science and put our planet at risk for profits? And, I don't know why a scientist would make up data- for what real gain? A little recognition? This should not be a political issue.

2. Recognition probably isn't the motivator - look at the research
grants and, as in Watergate, "follow the money".

4. Right, as everybody knows each scientist makes millions of dollars on "research grants"
Don't bother to look at $50+ million Koch Industries donated to front groups and advertising to prevent any public policy change to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Don't bother to follow the money from Exxon either... etc. etc. etc. While you are at it don't bother to notice the anti-climate change money flowing to the same advertising agency that big tobacco used. They were able to cloud the issue over whether smoking causes lung cancer for decades. A issue researchers in the field considered settled long ago. The same thing is happening now on climate change.

As everybody knows, you go into science for the money. If you want recognition, go into banking.:sarcasm:

Project much?:eyes:

6. Although millions are reached in aggregrate, you don't need that
much to motivate on an individual basis. Everybody has his/her own price - some low, some high.
