Wife of slain officer speaks out against new law
Edited on Tue May-04-10 05:34 PM by ArizonaLiberal

Julie Erfle, whose police officer husband Nick Erfle was killed by an illegal immigrant, told 12 News that he would be "infuriated" to hear his name being used by politicians promoting SB1070.

Speaking out for the first time about the new law, Erfle directed her harshest words at Republican State Sen. Russell Pearce, who has been invoking the memory of Nick Erfle and other slain officers to rally support for SB1070.

Nick Erfle was shot and killed in Phoenix on Sept. 18, 2007, after he stopped an illegal immigrant for jaywalking. The gunman was killed by police later that day.

Erfle said she had confronted Pearce three years ago after he had used Nick Erfle's name in a fund-raising letter, just hours after the officer's death. Once again, she says, she sees Pearce and other elected officials using the names of murdered officers for political and financial benefit.

The law Pearce has championed, Erfle said, would not have prevented her husband's murder.

I admire that woman's courage.

2. k/r -- great of her to speak out
It's pretty shameless how they've tried to use her deceased husband's name in fundraising campaigns.

"This is not the first time Julie Erfle has spoken out on illegal immigration. Just eight months after her husband's murder, she was viciously criticized by a Phoenix radio talk show host for publicly advocating immigration reform. She said Tuesday that she fully expects to be criticized once again for speaking out."

:applause:
