AzCentralJulie Erfle, whose police officer husband Nick Erfle was killed by an illegal immigrant, told 12 News that he would be "infuriated" to hear his name being used by politicians promoting SB1070.
Speaking out for the first time about the new law, Erfle directed her harshest words at Republican State Sen. Russell Pearce, who has been invoking the memory of Nick Erfle and other slain officers to rally support for SB1070.
Nick Erfle was shot and killed in Phoenix on Sept. 18, 2007, after he stopped an illegal immigrant for jaywalking. The gunman was killed by police later that day.
Erfle said she had confronted Pearce three years ago after he had used Nick Erfle's name in a fund-raising letter, just hours after the officer's death. Once again, she says, she sees Pearce and other elected officials using the names of murdered officers for political and financial benefit.
The law Pearce has championed, Erfle said, would not have prevented her husband's murder.
