Suns to wear ‘Los Suns’ jerseys for Game 2
1 hour, 11 minutes ago

PHOENIX (AP)—The Phoenix Suns will wear “Los Suns” on their jerseys Wednesday for Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals, owner Robert Sarver said, “to honor our Latino community and the diversity of our league, the state of Arizona, and our nation.”

The decision to wear the jerseys on the Cinco de Mayo holiday stems from a law passed by the Arizona Legislature and signed by Gov. Jan Brewer that has drawn widespread criticism from Latino organizations and civil rights groups that say it could lead to racial profiling of Hispanics. President Barack Obama has called the law “misguided.”

In a statement, Sarver said the frustration with the federal government’s failure to deal with the illegal immigration issue led to the passage of what he called “a flawed state law.”

He said that the law calls into question “our basic principles of equal rights and protection under the law” and will cause Arizona’s economy to suffer setbacks at a time when the state already is in economic distress.

130. Just Putting Los in front of something doesn't make it Spanglish
It should be los soles. They already had los sun jerseys. Now if they made them new ones with the correct name, I might be impressed. The players may be sincere, but the suns franchise is very concerned about the movement to move the All Star game out of Phoenix. The Suns don't want to miss out on all the bucks that come with the All Star game. Heck, if they were truly sincere about standing against the lousy anti-immigrant bill, the Suns would be the ones leading the "MOVE THE ALL-STAR GAME" movement.

131. The really nice thing about sports
is that it makes a shitload of money for a handful of people, while keeping regular Americans entertained, uninformed, stupid and contented - all to subsidize this handful of elites with their grandiose stadiums/arenas and conditioned box suites for the connected, the politicos and the rich. The gig has worked well.

102. two more things
1. Such a comment is nothing but a distraction from the thread's primary discussion. Your comment does NOTHING to alter people's decision to rec or unrec any given thread.
2. If you must talk about people unrec'ing threads, start your own OP about it. You may not be surprised that you'll get unrec'd clear down to the sub-basement.

124. It is not a distraction

I am asking because I don't see the reason why anyone would respond negatively to the OP.

That is a substantive question that goes to understanding the content of the OP and not the process question of rec or un rec.

If I had a problem with the unrec feature I would notify the admins. Your suggestion that you should start an OP on the subject is a violation of the rules and yesterday a thread doing that was locked.

Summary

The question on why someone would unrec a thread is a valid substantive question that actually goes to the heart of the OP and your suggestion to start threads on it is not welcomed on the board.

Now what would so tee off someone about my previous reply that you responded to that their response had to be deleted. Why do simple questions generate such hostility? Why are you so hostile?

132. I never unrec, but I can understand someone unrecing it because
I don't see the move by the suns to be terribly sincere or meaningful. The Los Suns jerseys are just a trend & there are lots of teams that have Los in front of their name. So they decided to wear their Los jerseys. Big deal! The owners of Los Soles stand to lose out on big bucks if the All-Star game isn't played on their court. If the owners of Los Soles supported the movement to move the All-Star game out of Arizona, then I wouldn't see it as another way to divert attention away from the move the all-star game movement. "Oh no, don't hurt the suns, they wear Los on their jerseys." People are so easy to fool in this country.

The Spurs only have white (home) jerseys that say "Los Spurs" so they can't wear them in PHX.

20. As you can see another poster below yours I am correct.
When the Suns have worn these uniforms many times in the past was it in anticipation of the unwritten law? Did the owner have advance knowledge years ago the law would be passed? The owner is trying to capitalize on reaction to the law. But people who live here know it's b.s.

104. Defending what is right is never wrong. I guess the players, who voted on this
and Steve Nash , who gave his political reason for being against the immigration bill, are also to be disdained because they too are millionaires. No one should ever listen to any of the Kennedy's , or Obama either. They are also millionaires. Money doesn't make you necessarily wrong. Bill Gates is a billionaire who has done a lot of good, so is Steve Jobs and Warren Buffett..

why were these worn several times this season and last? Because we always believe what team owners say, right? The players voted after being told what the owner wanted. He is the guy who signs their contracts for the next year. But of course there was no intimidation there, right?

134.  But they chose to wear these uniforms at this particular game as a "statement".
And if you think these players are"kowtowing" to any owner, you don't know basketball. The owners pay a high premium for those players because they are the ones that can call the shots. Owners always have the problem of players being enticed away by bigger money or better conditions. No one forces those players into anything. And BTW, I DO believe Staeve Nash, who is the player quoted and he was also an outspoken Anti-War opponent.

136. Yes I do know basketball better than at least 90% of the people on this site.
Yes there are a few superstars who can call their own shots but most of the players can't. The owners work together on that. You are very very naive if you think they have real power. If the CEO of Massey Coal has his miners wear 'Los Miners' uniforms in the mines because he says he against the new law are you going to defend that too?

I neither defend nor offend democrats or republicans-- I defend or offend the person and the action, regardless of political affiliation.

He signs their contracts and is responsible for the negotiation of new ones. The players knew he wanted the uniforms worn. It is funny how some DUers would never take the word of a Repub Senator about anything but a Repug sport team owner's word is golden.

14. However, Sarver is a Pug, and still managed to let us know
Edited on Tue May-04-10 03:43 PM by Beavker
per Faiz Shakir, on Think Progress, he also said this:

The frustration with the federal government’s failure to deal with the issue of illegal immigration resulted in passage of a flawed state law. However intended, the result of passing this law is that our basic principles of equal rights and protection under the law are being called into question, and Arizona’s already struggling economy will suffer even further setbacks at a time when the state can ill-afford them.

The fact he puts this back on the Federal Guvmit, does irritate me a bit though. His pukes had 8 years to get it done, and amid the most attempted legislative 2 years in a while, the GOP is screaming that, basically, Obama has failed on immigration. If his cronies in the Senate weren't so hell bent on ruining Obama, it would be done by now, as they've stretched out or killed everything that has been brought to the table. And that has been a lot of shit in my book.

knows both the federal government and the immigration crisis have been around for a very long time before January 2009.

"Los Suns" I love it! Muy bien!

Arizona, Colorado, Nuevo Mexico, Texas, California, Florida, Nevada... they all make our country sound much more poetic and humane.

On the other hand "tea baggers" and "minute men" sound like Anglo-Saxon sexual deviations/issues.

Just my dos centavos.

the bit about dressing like Native Americans) and very proud of the Minute Men.

I cannot tell you how sad I am that the right has misappropriated our country's glorious beginnings, at the hands of radicals and liberals, while the right fled the country or spied for the British..

This is so cool…I’m no sports nut but out of lack of anything else watchable (on 50,000 channels), I’ve been watching games.

I can hardly wait to see this.

Hmmm…ya think that old Sheriff Crap-a-ho, will be at the game with his Goose-Steppers, demanding "The Papers" from Nash, Ginobili, and Parker? What a great scene that would be, out onto the court, in the MIDDLE of the game, throwing the players to the floor, cuffing them because they did not have papers PHYSICALLY ON THEM then and there, dragging them off…Maybe holding them in pink undies for a couple weeks, until they could be verified?

Put your money where your big mouth is Sheriff Racist

"politics and sports should not be mixed..."

According to what or who? Is there a definitive list of what politics should not be mixed with? On what objective criteria is that list based on? What is the valid, precise and relevant reason that sports figures should not engage in political posturing?
