Times Square bomb suspect nabbed at airport
Pakistani-born U.S. citizen was attempting to fly to Dubai from JFK

updated 9 minutes ago

NEW YORK - Authorities arrested a U.S. citizen in connection with the failed bombing attempt in New York's Times Square as he tried to leave the country, Attorney General Eric Holder said Tuesday.

Faisal Shahzad, 30, was arrested at 11:45 p.m. ET Monday night by Customs and Border Protection agents as he attempted to board an Emirates airlines flight to Dubai at New York's JFK airport, officials said.

"It is clear that the intent behind this terrorist act was to kill Americans," Holder said.

Shahzad, a naturalized U.S. citizen who was born in Pakistan, was accused of driving a car bomb into Times Square, authorities said. He will appear in Manhattan Federal Court later Tuesday.

5. He's the registered owner of the vehicle.
He was caught on video getting out of the vehicle, changing his shirt, and fleeing the scene. He was apprehended while attempting to flee the country. The FBI says he left "a wealth" of evidence behind, including fingerprints inside the vehicle. So I'm going to go out on a limb here and say there's an off chance it's real.

Extraordinary rendition is offensive. Torturing to insanity is offensive, especially innocents.

Doubting a government that lies to the citizenry on a regular business under cover of state secrecy is not even close to offensive. It's sensible.

2. I recall an important reason for not surging in Afghanistan was the
instability it would cause in Pakistan....

Pakistani Premier Yousuf Raza Gilani says that the US's decision to send thousands of extra troops to Afghanistan may destabilize his country.

Gilani, in an interview with DPA, said in Islamabad on Sunday that an increase in US troops in Afghanistan is likely to lead to a spill over of militants inside Pakistan.

Civilians and military officials in Islamabad say the US troop build-up could force Taliban militants to infiltrate into Pakistani southwestern province of Balochistan that borders Afghanistan's Helmand.

The premier also added that the Surge would make the situation worse across the border region. http://www.presstv.ir/detail.aspx?id=112484§ionid=3...

120. I take your second point, but what does being a naturalized U.S. citizen have to do with
anything? I'm guessing being a native of Pakistan has something tto do with his desire to set a bomb off in the U.S. these days.

134. Destabilizing a country of fanatics with an atom bomb?
Midnight, just how do you think Pakistan should have been handled?

Should we have just let the terrorists in Afghanistan continue to organize and establish a kingdom?

The Iraq War was a lie and a mistake.

But Afghanistan and the Pakistan region?

They are a very different problem requiring a very different solution. War should be avoided at all costs. But how do you avoid war.

The facts that have been released suggest that this Pakistani placed the bomb in Times Square. So far, it looks like he did it.

If that does not fit everyone's belief system, then the belief system needs to be changed. Facts supersede beliefs. This guy will either plead guilty or get a criminal trial. He will get a chance to challenge the facts if they are untrue.

I predict that, as with the would-be terrorist from Yemen, this Pakistani will soon be cooperating with officials.

131. My BIL did two tours in Iraq. He mentioned last night...
...that there are a HUGE number of IED's over there that didn't detonate, many of which were simply built by idiots. We tend to not hear much about them over here...for somewhat obvious reasons ("Tune in at 5! Iraqi TERRA!rists plant bomb on road! Nothing happens!")

He told me that the radical imams put out their calls to jihad, ordering "everyone" to fight the Americans. Most ignore the calls. Many who heed it know what they're doing, or join up with a group to get trained in combat and IED manufacturing/planting. But there have apparently always been a few idiots who heeded the call, but had no idea what they were doing, and just tried to improvise something. Now and then the improvised bombs would actually kill someone. More often, they'd just fizzle and smoke, or maybe generate a small fireball. The overwhelming majority of the time, they'd do nothing at all.

Of course, he also mentioned that the Iraqi's were never above a little psychological warfare either. He is of the opinion that the "bomb" was never supposed to detonate, but was simply planted to scare people (remember, the root of "terrorist" is "terror", and you don't have to kill people to make them scared for their lives).

9. Times Square bomb suspect arrested 'at last second'
Edited on Tue May-04-10 09:01 AM by Botany
Source: CNN

New York (CNN) -- Authorities hunting for the suspect in the botched Times Square bombing dramatically beat the clock overnight, seizing a
Pakistani-American citizen moments before he began a long trip to his strife-torn homeland.

Faisal Shahzad, 30, was arrested around 11:45 p.m. ET Monday at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, said Attorney General Eric
Holder.

Shahzad will appear in a Manhattan federal courtroom Tuesday to face formal charges in the case.

Shahzad was on board Emirates Airlines Flight 202 to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and the jetway had been pulled back when the plane was called
to return to the gate, a law enforcement source said. Shahzad was booked through to Islamabad, Pakistan, via Dubai, a senior airline official confirmed.

27. Difference? Are you implying Bushco would not have arrested this guy?
If you follow the court cases, you will have noticed that Holder's D of J takes the same positions taken by the AG's under Bush--All the torture cases, habeas cases and FOIA cases--exact same legal positions, or worse. For example, Holder's D of J in a brief compared homosexuality with incest, pedophilia and bestiality. I don't think even Bushco ever went that far about homosexuality publicly and in the name of the United States.

While the AG has a bit more control that say HHS, its still a professional bureaucracy that knows that administrations come and go. Being a retired Fed, I can say with certainty that most political appointees are lead by the nose by the professionals in the Dept. Need an example, try Leon Panetta.

Both the tea party and other groups have a hatred of the American Government and a desire to see it destroyed. I can definitely see why some people would suspect that they may be involved. The only mistake in that theory was that this guy wasn't attacking a government building like McVeigh - the hero of the Tea Party - did.

They may vary in appearance and language, but the underlying principles are not very different.

Empty, jingoistic nationalism, murderous hatred, disregard for the life of innocents ("collateral damage"), not acting under the orders of an internationally recognized military, etc.

20. I agreed with the administration that no one or no group should be blamed until there was proof
I well remember the rhetoric in the wake of the Oklahoma City bombing that it was "Mideasterners". In that case, they were worng to say it and ended up wrong. The main people I heard saying it would be blamed on a tea partier was Rush Limbaugh. I did not hear a single administration or Democratic politician say it could be the right wing. I am happy I did not hear that.

It would actually be more frightening if it were a "tea party protester". It would show that at least one member moved to random violence. We already know that Pakistani terrorists are willing to do this.

28. Suspect arrested in NYC bomb attempt
Edited on Mon May-03-10 11:24 PM by EarlG
Source: MSNBC

Authorities arrested a suspect in the attempted weekend car bombing in Times Square, NBC News' justice correspondent Pete Williams reported early Tuesday morning.

A U.S. citizen of Pakistani descent, Shahzad Faisal, was arrested Monday night on Long Island, Williams reported.

Earlier, an official told The Associated Press that the potential suspect recently traveled to Pakistan. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the case was at a sensitive stage.

The officials said the man was a Connecticut resident who paid cash weeks ago for the SUV parked in Times Square on Saturday and rigged with a crude propane-and-gasoline bomb.

46. OBama had nothing to do with foiling this
The plot was foiled by a vendor in Time's Square. Not OBama, not DHS, not the FBI, CIA, or the NYC Po-po.

Just a common, work-a-day guy who noticed something amiss.

48. The post was tongue in cheek..(more or less)
Remember when the chimp foiled all those terrorist plots?

Like the one in Florida, where agents convinced a bunch of kids to be "terrorists". They didn't even know what the fuck was going on, but they liked the idea of getting shiny new boots. The chimp took big time credit for that. What a hero!

62. Of course not by Obama
he was at the White House with Bo looking for WMD's under the desk, under the sofa and up his ass.

9/11 happened after *bush was told by members of his cabinet and administration that an attack was iminent... chatter, Clark's hair on fire, etc. It happened and no one 'foiled it'. Not the FBI, CIA, AA, AAA, or any of the alphabet agencies, or Airport  Security, et.al.

However, props to the two American heros - working men, vendors who were more in tune with the shit on the streets than all those clever minds in D.C. prior to 9/11 and even now.

100. If the bomb had worked, those on the street would have been history, though.
Sad to say, what really saved folks from dying was the incompetence of the SUV bomber wannabe himself, much like the underpants bomber wannabe. After the failure, alert citizens were a help. But, had the bomber wannabes been competent, those citizens would have been blown up.

NEW YORK A suspect in last weekend's failed car bomb attack on Times Square was taken into custody late Monday while trying to leave the country, a law enforcement official said.

The suspect, a Pakistani, was identified at midnight Monday at John F. Kennedy International Airport and was stopped, said the official, who spoke to The Associated Press early Tuesday on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the investigation

76. Arrest made in N.Y. bomb case (LA Times)
Arrest made in N.Y. bomb case

An arrest was made overnight in New York in connection with the attempted car bombing in Times Square, police said early Tuesday, after a government official said investigators were focusing on a man of Pakistani origin who has been living in the United States.

"Law enforcement can confirm an arrest has been made," a spokesman for the New York Police Department said shortly after midnight. He would not give the person's name, but some news reports identified him as Faisal Shahzad, a naturalized U.S. citizen of Pakistani descent.

MSNBC said the arrest took place on Long Island. CNN said the man was picked up at John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens.

Earlier, a government official in Washington had said police and FBI agents were closing in on a man of Pakistani descent and suspected the man had not acted on his own when he left a Nissan Pathfinder laden with explosives in Times Square on Saturday.

notion that Queens is "on Long Island." Yes, Queens and Brooklyn are technically on the island called Long island, but anyone who's ever lived in NYC knows that Long Island = Nassau and Suffolk counties, and Queens and Brooklyn are referred to as New York City, and not "Long Island." Jeez. JFK is in Queens, in New York City. It is not "on Long Island."

I think the cops made a wild guess because the quality of the video was not tantamount to what the human eye could see (based on the snips I've seen in the media). But I thank the NYPD and the feds for capturing someone (for now). And let's not get into race-baiting stuff; yes I know all about 9/11 and radical Islam, but hey in the nation with the Oklahoma City bombings and someone who flew his airplane into an IRS building it shows that criminality does not discriminate.

1 30 a.m. cst wall to wall, "we got a terra ist" hosts that normally appear during the day on phone interviews with the fox live "back ups" LOL

I wish I had a dollar every time these three words were uttered on fox in the last hour:

"of Pakistani descent"

O wait they put a terrorist in a new york city holding cell??? OMG where is the outrage? Should he not have been shipped to gitmo first?

There is a large Pakistani community here.

Plus, easy to catch a flight back to Pakistan.

105. This is excellent news...
I hope the suspect is indeed the individual who parked that car...and kudo's to law enforcement on this one... :patriot:

The next step is to find out if he was in this with anyone else...and prosecute him if the evidence warrants it.

BTW...he will most likely be prosecuted in NYC...showing us once again, that terrorists can, and should be prosecuted in civilian courts. If this guy is guilty, the chances of him seeing daylight again are minimal at best. Crimes such as this are against the American people, and should be handled as such under civilian and not military law.

Bomb didn't go off, suspect captured, to be arraigned today in Federal Court in Manhattan...Can't ask for a whole lot more than that!

114. Cellphone led FBI to Times Square car bomb suspect arrest
Edited on Tue May-04-10 07:15 AM by Ian David
Cellphone led FBI to Times Square car bomb suspect arrest

The number from a disposable cellphone led FBI agents to the suspect arrested Monday night for allegedly driving a car bomb into Times Square on Saturday evening, according to a senior official.

They were able to basically get one phone number and by running it through a number of databases, figure out who they thought the guy was, the official said.

<snip>

The man had offered the vehicle on Craigslist, and FBI agents were able to recover the number from a disposable cellphone that had been used by the buyer.

The suspect didn't still have the phone. But using a lot of technology and access to database, agents located the suspect.

My guess is either:

a) He paid for the phone with his credit card
b) He used the phone to check his regular email account
c) He used the phone to call Mommy
d) He used the phone to book his flight to Dubai

122. U.S lucky Islamic terrorists are stupid
I mean how hard would it be to bring the U.S economy to a halt?

Really. The U.S has to be the most wide open target imaginable. How difficult would it be to put maybe three explosive devices in three different shopping malls in three major cities on a given Saturday afternoon?

I'm thinking it would not be all that difficult to do this, and a terrorist act of this sort would pretty well shut down the U.S economy for a while and lead to the final touches being put in place to complete the construction of the new U.S. police state.

Seriously, assuming that the terrorists are real jihadists, why can't they figure this out?

144. I would disagree
I think every mall in the U.S would be empty for weeks following an incident of the sort described. The stock market would (again) collapse and the economic fallout would be huge.

The last two bombing attempts were foiled by civilians. It's only a matter of time before one of these kooks set off the big one.
