Workers hit the streets on May Day in Cuba

HAVANA, Cuba (CNN) - Thousands packed Havana's Revolution Square on Saturday for International Workers' Day, drawing hoards of Cuban demonstrators, spectators, and trade unionists from around the world - including the United States and the United Kingdom.

"I've never seen anything like it," said Brian Hattsberger, a British labor unionist in attendence, wiping the sweat from his brow with his red labor hat. "It's just amazing."

For years since Cuba's bearded revolutionaries toppled then-dictator Fulgencio Batista on New Year's Day over half a century ago, residents have gathered in Havana on May 1 to listen to hours-long speeches from their former president Fidel Castro.

The elder Castro made his last showing in 2006 before stepping down because of illness, at first temporarily and then permanently, leaving the reins to his younger brother Raul.

1. Considering the weather, that had to be a miserable trip...
Edited on Sun May-02-10 11:37 AM by jxnmsdemguy65
for those US and UK activists... I imagine that the humidity in Havana with this storm system in the Gulf is hard to take...

Having said that, Castro's repression on that island is far worse than any excess of capitalism... it's time for Castro and his band of repressors to go!

Cuba Libre!

3. Yes. All you have to do is look at that crowd to see how miserable they are.

10. It's not arrogance,it's simple math. Most people under 60 would not remember
the times before Castro.

It would be as if we still had Ike as president. Boggles the mind.

11. If you don't know the difference between arrogance and simple math
I expect it's not all that difficult to have your mind boggled.

And of course the United States have to deny the Cuban Revolution. If they admitted that, next thing you know, they'd have to admit Haiti and how a bunch of slaves outdid them in the beacon of democracy department. And the United States will never do that.

12. Ah, yes, time to go back to the lovely Batista days!
I'm sure all the peasants were always smiling under him! About 70% of the population were functional illiterates, but things were sooooooooo much better then! No running water, but there were sewers for children to happily splash around in.

And people didn't dare criticize the wonderful state of things - over 7 years, about 20,000 people were killed, so there was no drama to upset the natural order of things. Health care? Bite your tongue! That's communist!

Damn Castro!!!!

Sarcasm off - and DAMN every fascist piece of shit who sings the praises of a free Cuba (euphemism for get that dirty brown Indian out of my casino).

9. Wow
Thanks for the post. They all have health care, and a place to live. If you listen to the sore losers from Florida who are mostly descended from the ruling class and Batista toadies you would think that Cubans live in chains and are whipped daily. They had a permanent 400 doctor mission in Haiti when the earthquake hit and the MSM didn't even mention it. These anti-Castro goons in the US are mainly just sore losers who chose the oppressors side over the workers. They also get lots of dough from those great folks at the CIA and Big Money who would love to turn Cuba into Haiti by raping and pillaging.
Maybe these assholes in Florida miss the days when protituting your daughters was the best options when the whole tourist industry was controlled by the Mafia with help from the good ole USA.
