Obama calls Miss. governor after deadly tornadoes, discusses oil rig leak
Source: WP

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is expressing his concern for the people of Mississippi after a deadly tornado struck the state over the weekend.

Obama called Republican Gov. Haley Barbour on Monday to discuss the federal response to the storms. At least 10 people in rural Mississippi and two in Alabama died from the storms.

Obama and Barbour also discussed the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico.

The White House says Obama assured the governor that every effort is being made to minimize the environmental impact of the leak, which began last week after the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded and sank. Eleven workers who were aboard the rig are missing.

1. I cannot support federal aid to Mississippi...at this time
I mean there is the deficit to worry about, you know. Although I am willing to reconsider if someone can suggest other places in the budget where we can cut to pay for aid to MS.

Mississippians need to understand that there are consequences to voting the wrong way in November.

3. Give No Federal Aid to Mississippi

....NONE...... MS has a state sales tax of 7.5% and a personal income tax of 7% not to mention real estate tax and vehicle tax... I say as long as their Gov want to be part of the socialism crowd.....SCREW THEM ALL WHEN IT COMES TO THE GOVERNMENT THEY SO WANT TO SEE OUT OF THEIR LIVES..... Let them be the model that you can run a state without taxes or assistance for Uncle Sam.

....MS Cant have it both ways...

4. Big fat biscuit face Haley's acted absymally towards ...
Mississippi's unemployed, complete with the theatrics of refusing stimulus monies, yet he's the first to ask for federal assistance when a tornado hits his backyard. Republican hypocrisy that's par for the course...

7. Granted, Haley's a Crowned-Toothed Flat-top
But you ain't much better. Who else is the Prez supposed to talk to?

They're in the same bidness. I think of Haley as a classic sociopath, more interested in his own power and vanity than his charges, viz subjects.

Nobody does hypocrisy better than Mississippi, I'm from there, too, and I know whereof I speak. It takes more cojones and ovaries to confront it there and then than it does from a safe distance. So here, to all the condescending assholes:

Beyond Faulkner, Delta Blues and the Elvis clones, I give you an antiquated version of the Eye-rak conundrum, predicted 23 years before its time from the flip side of Mississippi, one you'll probably never know:

5. As a red state Dem
I must say that I am appalled at the ignorance and bigotry displayed here. Most states are, after all, some shade of purple and neither red or blue.

I guess I will consider this thread an opportunity to add to my ignore list.

Deepwater Horizon was an ultra-deepwater dynamic positioned semi-submersible oil rig built in 2001. It was owned by Transocean and leased to BP through September 2013. In September 2009, it drilled the deepest oil well in history. Deepwater Horizon sank on April 22, 2010 as a result of an explosion two days earlier.

13. Right after Washington refunds all federal taxes paid by MS in 2010
Fair's fair, after all. Income taxes, FICA, Medicare, capital gains...stop collecting for 2010 and refund everything paid so far this year.

I think you might be on to something.

16. As far as I know Social Security and Medicare aren't bail outs . . .
Edited on Tue Apr-27-10 12:10 PM by defendandprotect
They are largely single payer systems --

And, Mississippi got no Federal funds this year?

For schools, roads -- ?

Banks got no bail out money -- ?

Financial companies no bail out money -- ?

Meanwhile, this is very sad environmental news re oil spill and tornadoes --

Look back, as well, on the huge financial assistance Bush gave to the state re

the hurricaines that came in a few years ago, though as I recall it, Mississippi

suffered much less than other states.

18. Your mantra was "No socialism for red states"...
Which I took as you saying "no federal government money of any kind for red states". I apologize if I misinterpreted your statement.

There aren't very many banks and financial companies in Mississippi, so I would guess that if there were any that received bail out funds in 2010 the number was at most in the single digits, but more likely was zero.

As to your statement of "Look back, as well, on the huge financial assistance Bush gave to the state re the hurricaines that came in a few years ago, though as I recall it, Mississippi suffered much less than other states."

Mississippi actually suffered from Katrina more than any other state, but the video from Mississippi wasn't as dramatic as the video from New Orleans. There were no rooftop rescues because there were no rooftops left from which to rescue people. The eye of Katrina came ashore on the MS/LA border, and the NE quadrant of a hurricane does the most damage, i.e. the part that impacted the MS Gulf Coast. Look up some pictures of the MS Gulf Coast from September 2005...nearly everything within 1/4 - 1/2 mile of the beach was leveled, wiped completely off the foundation.
