Earthquake Hits Off Taiwan Coast
Source: ASSOCIATED PRESS

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) -- The U.S. Geological Survey says a 6.9 magnitude earthquake has struck off the southeast coast of Taiwan.

The agency says the quake hit at 10:59 a.m. local time (0259 GMT) Monday, 195 miles (295 kilometers) off the southern Taiwan city of Taitung.

Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau says no tsunami warning has been issued.

Buildings swayed in Taipei, the capital, when the quake hit, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

3. I'm not sure this is
as unusual as it might appear. In the past, without significant damage, injury and/or loss of life, most quakes just weren't news worthy.

We do, however, seem to have had a significant number of "events" (quakes, volcanic eruptions, possible tsunamis...)lately.

4. There are several every day - news coverage will tail off

After a major quake, every tremor gets attention.

5. There are, on average, 134 earthquakes with magnitudes between 6 and 7
every year. So an earthquake of this magnitude happens almost once every other day, which is more like three a week than once a week. It's just a matter of how they're being reported.

6. Maybe it's because a Republican didn't win in 2008
that the "liberal media" is hyping "The End of the World" 2012 stuff ...
