SAN DIEGO — San Diego police say a package containing wires and batteries has exploded at a FedEx office but nobody was injured.

The explosion occurred shortly after 6 a.m. Wednesday in a strip mall in the Sorrento Valley neighborhood.

Lt. Dan Christman says employees sorting boxes were about 6 feet from the cardboard box when it exploded. The workers reported there was a flash and a smell like gunpowder.

Christman says batteries and wires were seen inside the box.

The building was evacuated and a police bomb squad was called in.

Update:

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego authorities say a package explosion at a FedEx warehouse appears to have been sparked by batteries and was not intentional.

City fire spokesman Maurice Luque (Loo-kay) says two lithium batteries in a box made contact and exploded shortly after 6 a.m. Wednesday at the building in the Miramar neighborhood. No one was injured.

8. Glad this happened on the ground and not in one of their planes
Edited on Wed Apr-14-10 11:06 AM by RamboLiberal
Probably wouldn't have damaged the plane but starting a fire I would think would be a worry in tightly packed cargo in a plane.

15. The key is to make sure there is no possibility of the contacts touching a conductor
It's not really very hard.

Don't do what my grandfather did once - He bought a bunch of alkaline batteries wholesale, when they were still rather expensive. He heard that keeping them in the freezer would extend their life.

He wrapped them up tightly.

In aluminum foil.

21. Poor witness memory...
When people get 'bomb' into their mindset, all of a sudden they see 'wires' and smell 'gunpowder'.
