Protests Mark Iraq War Anniversary

<snip>
Rallies took place in Tokyo, Seoul and Australia and more marches were expected in Europe and the Americas later in the day. A big turnout is expected in Madrid, still shaken from the bomb attacks many blamed on Spain's role in the Iraq war.

Incoming Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero has pledged to pull Spanish troops out of Iraq, calling the war a "disaster" and a "fiasco."

In London, two anti-war protesters climbed the landmark Big Ben clock tower at the Houses of Parliament, unfurling a banner reading "Time for Truth" after they reached the clockface 328 feet above the city.

"We want to send a clear message to (Prime Minister) Tony Blair (news - web sites) that we and the British people are fed up with the half-truths and evasions on Iraq," said Stephen Tindale, executive director of Greenpeace which organized the protest.

67. It's great to see a photo of that Miami kid, Camilo Mejia
He's DOUBLY brave for taking this position in a town with so MANY Cuban-American Bush supporters. The Bushes are really big with some of them, as you've noted George W. Bush goes to Miami often to rally support.

Taking a stand in the midst of a community of Cubans who followed the right-wing extremists from Batista's dictatorship to Florida shows a lot of courage.

They are intense.

Hope some Republicans will take the time to study them, and question whether they really look like wild-eyed fanatics, or looney-toon tree-huggers, or gun-grabbers, or whatever slur the right-wingers would hurl at them, or if they look like intelligent, alert human beings.

The inmates have had the run of the asylum far too long.

13. Tight shots and Old Glory
Notice how the faithful press is working hard to make the photographs (1) Uninformative and (2) Inflammatory.

They're almost all tight shots, which allows the official story to be "Small protests in various cities."

And an inordinate number of them of them show Our American Flag, to which we pledge allegiance, being desecrated in various ways, especially burning, which is bound to make good Americans feel very angry toward those wicked furriners.

The corporate press in action.

16. It looks like I should have trademarked my screen name.
In London, two anti-war protesters climbed the landmark Big Ben clock tower at the Houses of Parliament, unfurling a banner reading "Time for Truth"after they reached the clockface 328 feet above the city.

This is cool, but with all these protesters why is Blair going to call an election early? He knows the October surprise I guess.

88. I don't think it is that great
While I may not agree with the war I also don't condone the desecration of the US flag. Many thousands of men and women have fought and died under that flag protecting the freedoms that it represents. I don't know what is worse, the pictures of foreigners burning the flag or the one of an American writing on it like it is a bed sheet.

Attack Bush and his cronies all you like and I will be right there with you, but don't attack my flag or my country.

except for who is signing it and then there is the flag that flew at Ground Zero that everyone signed and that doesn't bother me. I guess for me it is a double standard, it only bothers me when someone does it out of anger or contempt.

95. Now you are reading way too much into my statement
Like I have said before, I don't like Bush. I don't think he is a good president and I welcome a change. The difference between me and many of you is I don't HATE him and I don't think he is a murderer. And whether or not you think he is a murderer is irrelevant. He was signing that flag the same way all the firefighters, police officers, soldiers, sailors, Marines, airmen, etc signed the one that flew over Ground Zero. The protester decided to write on the flag out of anger and whether he means to or not conveys a message of not hating this war, but hating his country. Like I said, this may be a bit of a hypocritical opinion, but that is the way I feel. I once got spit on by one of those "peace activists" because I took away the flag he was about to burn. Sorry if you don't like it, but that is one thing I can't sit by and watch without saying or doing something.

97. And that is why I used quotes
when I called him and apparently you a "peace activist" way to get your message of peace across, by hitting people and burning flags. And yes, I was successful in preventing him from desecrating a symbol of our country same as I'm sure many would do if he was burning a bible or the Koran or a cross or any other symbol that people hold dear. And the law was on my side on that one. The protest was on a military installation, I was working as crowd control and they were expressly forbidden from burning ANYTHING. So I was perfectly within my rights to take the flag from him and, if I really wanted to be a jerk (which I didn't because I truly do love peace) I could have dragged him in for assault for spitting on me.

99. Nope, never said that either.
I wasn't an MP, another example of you reading into my posts too much. I was just the lowest ranking guy in my unit at the time and got stuck doing this job. I was simply pointing out that, despite what you read into in my post, I was technically in the right in this case and the "peace activist" like yourself was ironically prone to violence. And yes, I could have, if I wanted to make it an issue done something more than just taking his flag, but decided it was better for everyone involved to just let him go. Plus, it takes a lot more than spitting in my face to make me angry, unlike some "peace activists" who get mad at the mere sight of any sign of authority.

101. When people are expressly forbidden from burning something
as they were in this case, not because we wanted to rob him of his rights but because burning something in the middle of a large group is stupid and dangerous, then stopping them from doing it isn't keeping him from "expressing his rights", it is looking out for the safety of the whole. And had I detained him or had to use minimal force to prevent this from happening it would not have been assault, it would have been me doing my job to uphold the rules that were clearly laid out to protect the whole.

But I am done trying to explain this to you, you are clearly one of those who is threatened by any kind of law and order or anyone in a uniform.

Who was simply trying to A. keep a moron from setting himself and the couple hundred people around him on fire and B. prevent something that I feel very strongly about.

I can guarantee that if you were at a pro-Bush or pro-war rally you wouldn't stand idly by and not say a word, as well you shouldn't if you feel strongly about it so don't get all high and mighty about how no matter what happens you believe that everyone should be allowed to do whatever the hell they want no matter what the outcome. What if that guy would have lit a whole crowd on fire. Then what, I am the irresponsible asshole who allowed to happen aren't I. Do me and society a favor and move to an island somewhere if you don't want to exist in a society that has a few simple rules (which by the way I didn't make, I simply enforced). If anyone else thinks I am a horrible fascist asshole I would love to hear it, seems to me you may be in this boat alone.

PS, you spelled FASCIST wrong.

We should create some means of putting all of this together, not in book form (too many people don't have time to actually "read"), in a pictorial display of humanity taking a stand for dignity, decency and value. These pictures could be characterized as the soul of humanity: compassionate, courageous and valuable.

and as an example of their professionalism in journalism felt compelled to add at the end "A fraction of the number from last years" (numbers of protesters)

73. THIS is human history!!!!
We are the "keepers" of such monumentous historic events!!! Please, please recognize that, we are cognizant of a period in humanity that will "scripture" the future. How we will script this turning point? Will we unite or do as our "fathers" have done and wield this experience to our own power instead of empowering humanity? Let us use this time in history as evidence of both the power of the human spirit and value of all human life. WE ARE ONE!!!!

81. Thank you all for marching and posting. This thread was so inspiring.
I had to work to 'put food on my family.'

I'm overwhelmed looking at this showing of humanity.

Just overwhelmed.

109. I have used this thread to create my own personal scrapbook.
When I showed my Mom, who really wants to escape any further involvement with "politics",...she weeped.

Humanity is taking a united stand,...this is historical and I pray it will be preserved, forever.
