Police: N. Idaho man fired gun near census worker

Associated Press - April 10, 2010 6:04 PM ET

ST. MARIES, Idaho (AP) - A northern Idaho man who police say fired his shotgun near a U.S. census worker who was trying to deliver a census form has been cited for exhibition of a deadly weapon, a misdemeanor.

Fifty-4-year-old Richard L. Powell of St. Maries faces up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.

The Benewah County Prosecutor's office says that on March 3 Powell told the census worker to get off his property and then fired a shotgun into the air.

Powell's pretrial conference is scheduled for April 26 at the Benewah County Courthouse.

14. no I have a somewhat absurd sense of humor
and live in an area that generates the kinds of feeling that shooter probably felt

the rural west if full of "interesting" characters, and "interesting" ideas

get over yourself

26. I'm not "full of myself"..
But it does get tiring seeing this stereotype constantly promogulated amongst people who would have an instant hissy fit if similar statements were made against certain other groups.

Maybe I'm a little too touchy about the subject, but it's seriously one of my pet peeves.

Then again, in others eyes, I may be a raging hypocrite.

Anyway, sorry for my harsh words, I blame my surly rural disposition.

29. see the deal is I can almost see my self doing something like that
or at least fantasize about it. Especially with bible pushers and other obnoxious trespassers. Hell I was kind of irritated at the census worker that hand-delivered my form and then got all pushy about what road he could take to get out of here. I pick up my mail - not sure why it needed to be hand-delivered.

30. And such activity is promulgated in fiction - such as the curmudgeonly
pair in "Secondhand Lion" who chased salesmen off their property with shotguns.

Little surprise it is copied in real life.

3. I was hired by the Census
And feel fortunate to live in the suburban Denver area - but I have no idea what to expect. I just need the money, after being unemployed for well over a year and without any unemployment benefits for the time being.

8. My hubby worked for the census in March
and is scheduled to go for another training in a couple of weeks to start another segment.

So far, he's only encountered one irate citizen. But the man did take the package. Hopefully he won't encounter any more of that. But we live in very red Central Texas, so I've been reminding him frequently to not argue with folks, just say 'have a nice day' and leave. And the bureau also emphasizes that action.

I think the Census Bureau is really needing workers and the extra money is very helpful. We are retired and live on social security and the $11.50 an hour plus 50 cents a mile is very helpful.

23. I worked the Census as a grad student in 1990 over summer
The worst and most uncooperative people were found in the Wealthier (more repuglican areas)... Some were downright hostile.

The kindest and most cooperative were in the lowest income areas!

10. EriKKK EriKKKson - CNN
ERICKSON: This is crazy. What gives the Commerce Department the right to ask me how often I flush my toilet? Or about going to work? I'm not filling out this form. I dare them to try and come throw me in jail. I dare them to. Pull out my wife's shotgun and see how that little ACS twerp likes being scared at the door. They're not going on my property. They can't do that. They don't have the legal right, and yet they're trying.

Thanks, have a nice decade...see ya in 10 years." :hi:

not wanting to fill out the form is one thing. but to threaten a civilian working part time for the commerce department with a shotgun? sounds like this guys a danger to society.

21. I doubt he would actually threaten anyone. He just want to incite others.
Actually, he just wants the ratings, so he can keep his high paying job and doesn't much care who has to get hurt or go to jail because of the way he seeks ratings.

He's not smart enough to hold folks attention any other way, I guess.

Political porn.

the Census, I got a letter urging me to send it in. I didn't get the Census form, though. Phone calls lead to endless recorded dead ends, without actually talking to somebody.
