Conservatives Turn Against Liz Cheney - As Bad As McCarthy
Source: Huffington Post

The backlash is growing against Liz Cheney after she demonized Department of Justice attorneys as terrorist sympathizers for their past legal work defending Gitmo detainees -- and now it's coming from within deeply conservative legal circles.

On Friday, the conservative blog Power Line put up a post titled, "An Attack That Goes Too Far." Author Paul Mirengoff, called Cheney's effort to brand DoJ officials the "Al Qaeda 7," "vicious" and "unfounded" even if it was right to criticize defense lawyers for voluntarily doing work on behalf of Gitmo detainees.

Reached on the phone, Mirengoff offered an even sharper rebuke, contrasting what Cheney is doing to the anti-communist crusades launched by Sen. Joseph McCarthy and, in some respects, finding it worse.

"It could be worse than some of the assertions made by McCarthy, depending on some of the validity of those assertions," Mirengoff said, explaining that at least McCarthy was correct in pinpointing individuals as communist sympathizers. "It is just baseless to suggest that share al Qaeda values... they didn't actually say it but I think it was a fair implication of what they were saying."

1. The Cheneys do not believe in democracy. Her father belongs in
jail for his usurpation of the laws of this country. I don't understand why they are given any kind of respect or consideration at all by the media.

Good to see that some Conservatives realize the danger of people like her.

2. Most wingnuts actually like McCarthy
and wish we had someone like that again. I don't think this argument will get much traction with those folks.

5. Didn't he have a Black daughter which caused drama.
And wasn't he doing what he was doing to ensure support for a political seat...and not through true devotion?

9. Perhaps you're thinking of Strom Thurmond, but Thurmond's daughter caused no drama, poor soul.
And I believe that McCarthy did what he did because of J.Edgar Hoover and also because McCarthy was a tad nuts.

11. No, he had one daughter, adopted late in life
And it is unlikely that he had any 'on the side'. He was a vile man, who destroyed the lives of many good Americans. He destroyed himself in the process, which was as it should be.
If you want some perspectives from the time, you could read 'Scoundrel Time' by Lillian Hellman. You could view films such as Woody Allen's 'The Front' or 'Goodnight and Good Luck'.
He was one of the most awful characters in our history. He did not have a Black daughter.

and that was supposed to be the reason she was oh so concerned about it

10. Actually, this is an insult to Senator Nut Job McCarthy Per wiki:
"In an incident for which he would be widely criticized, McCarthy lobbied for the commutation of death sentences given to a group of Waffen-SS soldiers convicted of war crimes for carrying out the 1944 Malmedy massacre of American prisoners of war. McCarthy was critical of the convictions because of allegations of torture during the interrogations that led to the German soldiers' confessions. He charged that the U.S. Army was engaged in a coverup of judicial misconduct, but never presented any evidence to support the accusation.<21> Shortly after this, a poll of the Senate press corps voted McCarthy "the worst U.S. senator" currently in office.<22>" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_McCarthy

I hate McCarthy. But, compared to Liz and Darth Cheney, the insane Senator from Illinois sounds like a frickin' hero.

Everything is relative, I guess. (pun not originally intended).

13. So what is the point of this ad. Is Liz Cheney running for office somewhere?
Sorry if I'm out of the loop. I'm working many extra hours a week trying to keep my head above water and Liz Cheney isn't on the list of priorities.

17. LOL.
He served as an intelligence briefing officer for a dive bomber squadron in the Solomon Islands and Bougainville. McCarthy reportedly chose the Marines with the hope that being a veteran of this branch of the military would serve him best in his future political career.<13> He would leave the Marines with the rank of captain. It is well documented that McCarthy lied about his war record. Despite his automatic commission, he claimed to have enlisted as a "buck private." He flew twelve combat missions as a gunner-observer, earning the nickname of "Tail-Gunner Joe" in the course of one of these missions.<14> He later claimed 32 missions in order to qualify for a Distinguished Flying Cross, which he received in 1952. McCarthy publicized a letter of commendation which he claimed had been signed by his commanding officer and countersigned by Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, then Chief of Naval Operations. However, it was revealed that McCarthy had written this letter himself, in his capacity as intelligence officer. A "war wound" that McCarthy made the subject of varying stories involving airplane crashes or antiaircraft fire was in fact received aboard ship during an initiation ceremony for sailors who cross the equator for the first time.<13><15>

23. I didn't know he lied about his service record
Twelve combat missions in WW2 is pretty good in my books. But I guess a real pathological liar can't even be satisfied with a respectable truth.
