Druggists opposing abortion could be shielded
Druggists opposing abortion could be shielded
By Matt Franck
Post-Dispatch Jefferson City Bureau
03/17/2004

JEFFERSON CITY - Pharmacists in Missouri who oppose abortion could refuse to fill prescriptions for "morning-after" birth control without risking their jobs, under a bill that many say signals a new battleground in the fight over reproductive rights.

The Missouri bill is one of more than a dozen filed across the country in the past few years that seek to protect pharmacists who object to the increasingly popular form of emergency contraception. Critics of the measures fear that they could keep rape victims from getting the drugs quickly enough to prevent pregnancy.

....

The Missouri bill would leave it up to pharmacists to be guided by their own definitions of when they believe life begins. The legislation says they could refuse to dispense any drug that they feel could "contribute to the death of a human being by abortion or otherwise."

2. That is freaking insane.
Don't these idiots realize that leaving it up to an individual like that is way more likely to cause more abortions than they're hoping to "prevent"?

The message here is, Girls, don't be having sex on Saturday night, because you don't know who's gonna be working the Walgreen's counter on Sunday.

God help the girls who are sexually assaulted, and manage to find the courage to hit a pharmacy the next day, only to be revictimized by some freepin' pharmacist who thinks that pregnancy prevention is bad bad medicine. How many pharmacies is she likely to try before her courage fails her?

Yikes

6. How very republican.
Stories like this have the potential to be a powerful political issue. There are many decent Americans who vote republican who will start to say that the Reich wing fundamentalist fucks running the republican party are going too far.

14. I'm in KC - Where do I sign up!
It embarrasses me to live in MO and then I just get used to that and Kansas does something stupid. Fred Phelps and creationism. Sigh. Where do the liberals live? Is there any place that doesn't have these right-wing crazies running things?

11. Gee, that's a nice precedent!
I'm glad to hear that as a teacher, I can pick and choose who I serve in the classroom. And if some students' political and religious views don't jibe with mine, I don't have to work with them. Wheeeeee! Praise the Lord.

12. So Catholic Pharmacists Wouldn't Have To Dispense Birth Control Pills And
they could remove all condom displays and spermicide products from their store?

-- Allen

I wonder what will happen to 'Satan's cotton fingers'?

15. And Christian Scientist pharmacists....
And Christian Scientist pharmacists wouldn't be obligated to dispense ANY medications at all?

That's how absurd this is. If you don't want to fill prescriptions for what DOCTORS prescribe for their patients, don't become a frickin' pharmacist.

Very simple.

I laughed until I had tears streaming down my face when I first heard of "Satan's cotton fingers". I haven't checked in there for awhile. Thank's for reminding me!

13. This is even more silly when you realize that
the "morning after" pills are not "abortion" pills, because they prevent the eggs from being implanted in the uterus lining, something that doesn't happen until a few days afterwards. As the article says, it is "emergency contraception" -- it PREVENTS pregnancy, it doesn't abort one.
