Purported Al Qaeda Letter Calls Truce in Spain
CAIRO (Reuters) - A group claiming to have links with al Qaeda said Wednesday it was calling a truce in its Spanish operations to see if the new government would withdraw its troops from Iraq (news - web sites), a pan-Arab newspaper said.

In a statement sent Wednesday to the Arabic language daily al-Hayat, the Abu Hafs al-Masri Brigades, which claimed responsibility for the Madrid bombings that killed 201 people, also urged its European units to stop all operations.

"Because of this decision, the leadership has decided to stop all operations within the Spanish territories... until we know the intentions of the new government that has promised to withdraw Spanish troops from Iraq," the statement said.

"And we repeat this to all the brigades present in European lands: Stop all operations."

<SNIP>

"The Spanish people... chose peace by choosing the party that was against the alliance with America," the statement said. The newspaper planned to publish it Thursday.

24. Sorry f-ers
You fired the first shot.

If you think Spain is going to roll over and play dead, you're sadly mistaken. I hope they root out the scum and hang their bodies in the Prado.

Maybe Al Qaeda (or whoever) bought the US propaganda and believed that "they" won. I don't think Spain has. It would be absolutely delicious to see the Socialists do better on terror than idiot boy.

Note to Bush: it's the terrorists (not Iraq), stupid.

52. I'm so relieved at you first three posters for your sentiments...
I was beginning to think that all of us in DU and in America forgot that there REALLY ARE fanatic whacko's out there doing harm and causing mayhem.

Going into Iraq was theeeeeeeee dumbest thing to do at this time. It has stirred up a fresh hornets nest and we didn't even finish our work in Afgahnistan. This admin doesn't know it's arse from a hole in the ground in terms of putting down terrorism.

I'm not anti-defense but I do like the idea of "police action" (whereever possible) rather than conventional war.

We weren't in Iraq on 911. And as soon as we start giving them things they want when they attack, where do you think they will stop? When the United States is a Muslim-based theocracy?

16. Sounds like what
the Israelis say oops I mean the Palestinians say oops, I mean any opponent says that doesn't have a real plan to end a conflict.

This is exactly the quagmire many saw when the boy king took us in there. The only solution to Iraq is a change in control combined with a reduced US footprint as Wesley Clark has said.

20. No, but we were bombing the shit out of it.
We also had troops all over Saudi Arabia, gave the Taliban 45,000,000 and trained the people (Mujahadeen) who organized Sept 11th. We don't give a shit about the Palestinians. We support all kinds of despotic regimes in the region and all over the world because it's profitable. I could go on and on. So if our government stopped doing all this shit then maybe we could try having some lasting peace.

However, Osama wanted the US out of Saudi Arabia. If he was actually behind 9/11, Bush gave him what he wanted.

18. Actually, we were in Iraq and Saudi Arabia
For ten years before 9/11.

One of the major claimed objectives of Al Qaeda is to get the West out of the Middle East. They were most aggrieved by the presense of US troops in Saudi Arabia.

Not saying this justifies their attacks, but that is the timeline.

51. WE WANT BUSH TO WIN
"The Spanish people... chose peace by choosing the party that was against the alliance with America," the statement said.

WE WANT BUSH TO WIN

The statement said it supported U.S. President George W. Bush in his reelection campaign, and would prefer him to win in November rather than the Democratic candidate John Kerry, as it was not possible to find a leader "more foolish than you (Bush), who deals with matters by force rather than with wisdom."

In comments addressed to Bush, the group said:

"Kerry will kill our nation while it sleeps because he and the Democrats have the cunning to embellish blasphemy and present it to the Arab and Muslim nation as civilisation."

"Because of this we desire you (Bush) to be elected."

The group said its cells were ready for another attack and time was running out for allies of the United States.

"Whose turn is it next? Will it be Japan or America, or Italy, Britain or Oslo or Australia?" the statement said, adding Pakistan and Saudi Arabia were also targets.
