Scott Brown to back Democrats' jobs bill

By Ben Pershing
Newly elected Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.) will vote to advance Democrats' $15 billion jobs bill Monday evening, breaking with his party and giving Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) one of the two votes he needs to move the measure forward.

Democrats have sought to pressure Brown into backing the measure, pointing out that he captured the late Sen. Edward Kennedy's (D) seat by promising to be an independent voice. With Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) absent following his cancer diagnosis, Democrats need at least two Republican votes to reach the 60 necessary to move to final passage later this week, and so far no other GOP senator has announced plans to support the measure.

"I came to Washington to be an independent voice, to put politics aside, and to do everything in my power to help create jobs for Massachusetts families," Brown said in a statement issued by his office. "This Senate jobs bill is not perfect. I wish the tax cuts were deeper and broader, but I will vote for it because it contains measures that will help put people back to work.

"I was disappointed with the continuation of politics-as-usual in the drafting of this bill, as it was crafted behind closed doors, without transparency and accountability. I hope for improvements in that process going forward. All of us, Republicans and Democrats, have to work together to get our economy back on track. I hope my vote today is a strong step toward restoring bipartisanship in Washington."

Jobs Bill Passes Major Hurdle After 5 GOPers Join Dems
Ben Frumin | February 22, 2010, 5:47PM

Five Republicans joined Democrats in a key cloture vote moments ago, allowing debate on a jobs package to move forward. After overcoming this hurdle, debate on the bill can begin.

Sen. Scott Brown (R-MA) broke with his party and voted with the Democrats. So did Sens. Olympia Snowe (R-ME), Susan Collins (R-ME), Kit Bond (R-MO) and George Voinovich (R-OH).

Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE) was the only Democrat to break with his party.

The final vote tally was 62-30.

1. And the teabaggers line up a 'real conservative' for 2012.
Hopefully.

As it is, I don't see much of a chance to kick Senator Softcore out unless he really screws up in the next two years.

2. CNN is as bad as Fox for lying
they have an article that says he is going to vote for CLOTURE on the bill so they CAN'T move it forward. Unless they changed it go check.

12. He did vote for cloture.
I'm not sure if you're adding the "can't" addition as your interpretation of what voting for cloture means. But he did vote for cloture (to end the filibuster).

3. Wow. We talked about this at work today, and no one felt they would reach cloture.
This isn't the greatest bill in the world, but it's stunning news that some GOPers broke ranks (finally).

Nelson has to go.

4. This is why
I said that people who thought that Scotty Brown would be a Rethug presidential contender were full of it. He's not anywhere near reich wing enough for them.

But, at this point, they celebrate him, because he's keeping that MA seat from going to a progressive, and they can probably count on him to fall in line when it comes to the really important votes, such as SCOTUS nominations, etc.

The Repukes won't curse him until they have a sizable majority in the Senate and a GOP president.

13. So, if Brown had voted as programmed
Edited on Tue Feb-23-10 10:39 PM by gratuitous
The cloture motion would have passed 61-31, instead of 62-30. Uhm, okay.
