U.S. Factory Shipped To China (1,100 Jobs Lost in PA)
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/03/05/eveningnews/main604256.shtml

Eight months after a factory that makes television screens shut down, an invasion of sorts has landed in Pennsylvania.

Scavenger crews are now dismantling the plant for a Chinese company that's bought the equipment and plans to put it to work on its own soil, reports CBS News Correspondent Jim Acosta.

"Our competition is overseas and people in the United States are losing out," said former factory worker Ron Welch.

Welch and 1,100 other workers once made TV screens here. Now they see trucks clearing an economic battlefield that America lost.

"It's hard to watch our jobs going down the road in tractor trailers," said Scott Conway, another laid-off worker.

Once this project is finished and the equipment is reassembled in its new plant in China, the workers won't be making $18 an hour. Over there, the average wage is closer to $2 a day.

4. Disgusting!
This administration and its lapdog Congress stuff their pockets with loot while the US economy is dismantled.

This extreme version of "dog-eat-dog" capitalism is a throw back to the days of the robber barons. Unless our representatives get off their butts and start fighting for us SOON, we are totally screwed!

Unless capitalism is regulated, greed corrupts the system.

6. Because they have nuclear weapons?
Just guessing though. :-)

Actually, I think the Chinese government has made a lot of progress in the right direction in the past 10 years. They just passed a constitutional amendment protecting private property and expanding human rights. They know they have to keep their shit together if they want to stay in the WTO and they can't restrict freedoms to the "special economic zones" like Hong Kong and Shanghai forever. Satellite TV and widespread internet access are throwing China open to the world.

Everything Bush has touched has turned to shit. If anything is going to send China backwards in terms of human rights abuses and expansionist aggression it's the US sticking it's nose into the region.

5. This is my town, my friends and neighbors...
We have had 2 other factories shut down recently. They have been taking the plant apart for a few months now. This is deep republican country...this is ONE of the reason I don't think there is any way in hell that * is going to win this state in November.

7. I doubt the plant will be reconstructed in China
China is in the middle of a huge building boom. They are buying up every bit of scrap steel they can get thier hands on. Most likely these factories will be melted down.

8. It is being dismantled piece by piece and being shipped

over. The only difference in the China plant than the one up the road from my house, is that China is building a separate building for workers to live & sleep in. While they make 2 dollars a day.

And my 78 yr old father with 3 jobs, is being used as a taxi service to run the big wigs around town.
