Thomson plant in Marion shuts down putting 990 out of work
The Associated Press

March 16, 2004

MARION, IND. -- Some 990 workers at Thomson's television picture-tube plant are out of work after the company announced it would shut down the operation Tuesday, a company spokesman said.
Officials told Marion workers and 545 employees at the company's Circleville, Ohio, glass plant that both operations would close, company spokesman Dick Knoph said. Employees will be dismissed immediately after the meetings, he said.
"The reason is economic (with) declining sales among North American customers," Knoph said.
Thomson tube making was profitable in Europe and China, but not North America, the company said in a press release.
The international company employs 50,000 worldwide and 10,000 in the United States. It markets the RCA brand of electronics in North America and Thomson brand in Europe. It markets both in Asia.
Production ends Tuesday at the 1.2-million-square-foot plant in Marion, located about 60 miles northeast of Indianapolis. The company will phase out work in Circleville by the end of the month, Knoph said.

2. Look at that Bush* job machine go!
Go, jobs, go! Especially go as far way as you can from important swing state Ohio! Bush* doesn't need you! No, not at all. </sarcasm>

Aside: Why is tube making more profitable in Europe than here? Low-wage China I can understand, but Europe? Are they in Eastern Europe, perhaps?

3. It's a demand-side issue
Reading between the lines, Americans are moving quicker to purchase flat-screen, plasma and LCD technology. CRT's probably have much stronger share overseas.

The real issue is where are the replacement jobs for these 990 people?

4. I'm here in Indiana
Waiting to see how many jobs we have to lose before this state votes for the Democratic presidential candidate. We love our Democratic governors . . . we've lost job after manufacturing job, and Delta airlines got a huge taxpayer subsidized facility to maintain their airplanes, and they left us holding the bag, and moved down south, where labor is cheaper. This is what we get in return for our corporate welfare.

You'd think these Hoosiers would be getting a clue about these corporate weasels by now.

Maybe this year!

5. Another outsourcing swindle...
I've said this before, but with all the jobs being shopped overseas, what kind of jobs - that will provide a living wage - will replace them?

No straight or intelligible answers from the government or business communities.

8. err--well military jobs?
that oughta do it.
we can replace all of those lost jobs with military jobs!

There will be plenty of them available since we are privatizing the military and there will be plenty of side industries involved--but then, those may also depend upon outsourcing to cheaper labor in places like China or Taiwan.

The other day, Gordon Liddy while appearing on C Span, suggested to a fifty two year old caller from Michigan who was saying there were no more jobs in Michigan for him and for many others who have had jobs for more than thirty years, that he move to Scotsdale Arizona--I kid you not--that was this idiot's solution to the job problem. Telling a fifty two year old man to move from Michigan to ARizona to get work.

and if he did not take that advice, I have no doubt that Liddy would have then accused him of not being willing to pull himself up by his bootstraps. LOL

7. But employers are chomping at the bit to hire workers
I guess they didn't catch a ride on the big bush boom engine! When are the lies about the economy going to bring Bush down? I am sure there will be plenty of hamburger manufacturing jobs for the unemployed to go to.

I wonder which those employees would like to have?

More jobs lost in Ohio...just what we need too.

Maybe the b*monkey will come back again and tell us how great the economy is going.

14. That's right...
this administration is selling us down the tubes..They're taking over because we the people, allowed this to happen. We've all sat and waited to "see" what's going to happen while at the same time, they've shoved it down our throats..But guess what, we got what we deserved because we didn't do anything..Was just lip-service coming from us..If we think we're going to win, I doubt it...If we think we're getting him out of the WH, I don't think so..Those elections aren't going to happen..They've played us like a bunch of fools because they knew we wern't going to do a thing..Look how fast the people in Madrid were in the streets..It goes to show that we're weak..
