Actress Luise Rainer celebrates centenary

Once married to playwright Clifford Odets, Miss Rainer, the star of such classics at The Great Ziegfried and The Good Earth, will celebrate at the Arts Club in Mayfair with pals such as Sir Ian McKellen, Jarvis Astaire and Lord Taverne.

Although a long time resident of Belgravia, she will, as a German, not be receiving a letter from the Queen, but Georg Boomgaarden, the German ambassador, has composed a few words for the occasion.

The secret of a long life is to never trust a doctor, the old girl tells me. When recently a young man got up for her on a London bus, she looked at him aghast and said: Do I really look that old?

She has a lovely face, and it only seems to be enhanced by what looks like a life lived with humor. Her wrinkles look like laugh lines.

I think they mean "The Great Ziegfeld", the 1936 musical.
