GOP Financial Struggles Jeopardize 2010 House Election Bids

The National Republican Congressional Committee, the financial arm for GOP House campaigns, has raised less than a third as much money as its Democratic counterpart and ended 2009 with barely enough money to fully finance a single House race, Politico reported Sunday.

Financial woes are dimming the GOP's bright prospects of making major gains in the House next year and some GOP strategists are blaming an unlikely source: Republican incumbents.

The National Republican Congressional Committee, the financial arm for GOP House campaigns, has raised less than a third as much money as its Democratic counterpart and ended 2009 with barely enough money to fully finance a single House race, Politico reported Sunday.

Despite evidence of solid opportunities in at least 40 districts this year, Republican incumbents have donated well below expectations, GOP strategists told Politico.

millions and just barely kept it.

Because it was a by election the Republicans had to invest 6 million and they just barely win it.

Busby is running hard on the Democrat side and I am sure has raised a lot, I get an email every week with all of her fund raisers.

Bilbray the incumbent is never seen here and virtually never comes here, a district in which he has never lived in.

candidates with slim to no chance of being elected. They seem to be very good at that lately.

I do believe we Dems will at least hold our own and maybe increase our seats in congress in '10 despite all the doom talk on the MSM, and I will laugh my ass off when it happens.

While the recent political chatter in Washington has focused on Democratic retirements from Congress, Republicans are leaving the House in greater numbers, a trend that if it continues could blunt the party's momentum heading into the November midterm elections.

Rep. Henry E. Brown Jr. (S.C.) on Monday became the 14th Republican to announce that he will not run for reelection in 2010. Ten Democrats have said the same, including an attention-grabbing four in the past two months from swing and Republican-leaning districts.

A broad look at those coming open seats suggests more parity, in terms of the two parties' opportunities and vulnerabilities, than conventional wisdom suggests.

Each side has three seats won by the other party's presidential candidate in 2008. For Democrats, they are Louisiana's 3rd District and Tennessee's 6th and 8th districts; for Republicans, they are Delaware's at-large seat, Illinois's 10th District and Pennsylvania's 6th District.
