India expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the Copenhagen climate change talks on Tuesday, re-affirming its solidarity with China, even as Beijing came under open fire from Europe for scuttling a more ambitious deal...

In parliament hours earlier, Mr Ramesh said China and India worked “very, very closely together”, along with Brazil and South Africa, a group that now calls itself “Basic”.

“The Basic group has emerged as a powerful force in climate change negotiations and India should have every reason to be satisfied with the role it has played in catalysing this quartet,” Mr Ramesh told parliament.

(Mr Ramesh) said the quartet resisted European-led demands for an ambitious global goal for a 50 per cent cut in emissions from current levels by 2050, and for a legally binding instrument.

The target BASIC 'defeated' was a 50% cut from 2010.
