Hundreds of women lead protest in Afghanistan
Source: LA Times

Followed by about 500 men, they demand that the government purge anyone connected to the Taliban, war crimes or corruption. Many hold pictures of slain relatives.

Several hundred women, many holding aloft pictures of relatives killed by drug lords or Taliban militants, held a loud but nonviolent street protest today, demanding that President Hamid Karzai purge from his government anyone connected to corruption, war crimes or the Taliban.

The unusual display of political activism by women comes as Karzai is under increasing pressure to remove from his cabinet anyone connected to rampant corruption, including links to the flourishing drug trade. His own finance minister says corruption is the biggest threat to the future of Afghanistan.

Earlier this week, the Afghan Rights Monitor released a poll suggesting that half of Afghans think of the Karzai government as illegitimate because of the election fraud. The cabinet selections, said the group's director, Ajmal Samadi, represent a "win or lose time" for Karzai.

4. I hope these women receive the peace their families deserve.... Escalating this war is wrong.
I read in another post that the Afghan govt. wants 10 to 20 years of military help from U.S. to help train their own citizens. That's a whole lot of tax dollars from Americans who can't get help financing their own children's training in our universities here at home. Another reason not to support this escalation.

7. The women want the US supported
and protected Karzai Government to remove Taliban members from their government. Why is the US supporting this, and with money that most Americans would be prefer was spent on the declining US economy, on jobs, on health care and education?

And why is the US paying Taliban forces NOT to attack US troops delivering weapons etc? In fact, what are we doing there at all since a majority of the people of Afhanistan want us to leave so that they can sort out their own country's problems.

The Women of AFghanistan have said that the presence of US troops in their country has made their lives, already caught between two brutal groups vying for power, the Taliban and the Wars Lords far more dangerous as our bombs continue to kill their civilians. Now they are caught between three warring factions, none of whom care about their safety. They want at least one of them removed.

Too bad Americans know so little about the innocent civilians we blithely kill in our pursuit of resources around the globe, nor do they seem to care.

6. When i read and hear
about women like this it makes me think of all the rights even though there are still some inequalities that exist between men and women that i am privileged to have. This is how are right to vote started, rights to have control over our own reproductive health, equal pay,and a few that are not mentioned. So to the Afghanistan sisters, i hope that you achieve your goals through the peaceful means that you have chose. And peace and love to you.
