'Slim Fast' Recalls All Shakes, Diet Drinks (Moderate Food Poisoning Toxin)
Source: ABC News

Slim Fast is recalling every last one of its popular diet drinks over concern they may be contaminated with bacteria that can cause moderate food poisoning.

All cans and cartons of ready-to-drink Slim Fast products -- about 10 million of them -- are affected, "regardless of flavor, best-by date, lot code or UPC number," the recall notice reads.

Unilever, which makes Slim Fast, said the recall was prompted by "quality testing" that turned up Bacillus cereus, a toxin that can cause nausea and diarrhea but that is not life-threatening.

A Food and Drug Administration official said the inspection that uncovered the B. cereus was conducted after several consumers complained to the company. The official said FDA has received "a handful of complaints from time to time about this product but not recently."

I had food poisoning in August. It's not an "effective weight loss program", despite your feelings on the subject.

20. One stomach flu away from your goal weight
Remember that line from "The Devil Wears Prada"?

I wonder if this is connected to the secret of Slim Fast. Maybe they put a tiny amount of something that causes just enough to make you lose weight, but not enough for you to realize you're sick. But somehow they got the amount mixed up and added too much--sort of like what happened to Dennis Quaid's twins.

22. I think the real irony here is that ...
... people can get food poisoning from something that is, in its non-tainted state, food substitute.

23. Well, believe it or not.......
I used to know the guy that "invented Slim Fast". I boarded my mare at his wife's barn in Cincinnati for awhile.

I think he was a chemist by trade. He used to say that all Slim Fast was is chocolate milk with some extra vitamins thrown in. He had long since sold the product rights to whatever company took it and ran with it. Then started his own company.

The whole family was kind of wacko.

32. I've often wondered
how hard it would be to get a pill containing nothing but tapeworm eggs approved for sale as an all natural diet pill. Maybe breed for extreme sensitivity to some relatively benign toxin that you can use to flush them out.

They got botox through somehow, this should be a cakewalk. Eat whatever you want and lose weight (terrifyingly fast)!

34. Disgustingly enough, that very thing may have been done....
... between 1900 and 1920. Snopes says its status as an urban legend is "Undetermined" however. http://www.snopes.com/horrors/vanities/tapeworm.asp

All I know is that my mom, who was born in 1924 herself, told me this as "fact" when I was a kid. Good to have snopes.com now. ;-)

5. I just started drinking these a few weeks ago as a dietary supplement in the morning.
I almost never eat breakfast so I recently started drinking the royal chocolate flavor shakes. I like the taste and they make sure I get a fair number of calories in me before lunch. This kind of sucks. I have a decent supply at the moment. I have some powder as well but I don't like it as much. Oh well.

Scotch.

Have a few shots of that bad boy before you leave the house, or in your coffee, and you'll be rip-roarin' ready to go until "lunch".

19. Studies are clear Atkins is the best for weight loss & Lipid Profile
Not only does the results from several studies show the Atkins Diet outperforms all the other "fad diets" (South Beach; Mediterranean; Low Fat; Zone; Ornish or "Vegetarian") in weight loss...The BEST PART is the Atkins Diet also produces the best overall blood cholesterol levels or Lipid Profile!

I had a spinal cord injury back in 2003. I was diagnosed a quadriplegic with an incomplete spinal cord injury to C-4/5 that left me unable to walk at first. However, after lots of rehab I can now walk short distances. Anyway, my point is I can't do any high intensity cardio like running or riding a bike due to my disability and I have still lost 55lbs in under a year. I am 5'9" and weighed +220lbs in January of 2009 and I now around 165lbs. The best part is my Lipid Profile is better than it has ever been! I have done 3 different cholesterol test within the past year...One at my doctor, a home test and a home mail in test.

Total Cholesterol is well under 200mg/dl
LDL-C is under 100mg/dl
HDL-C is above 60mg/dl
Triglycerides are around 125mg/dl

I know it seems counter intuitive that eating a diet high in fat & protein would produce blood cholesterol results this good but if you think about how the human body has "evolved" it makes sense. Humans have evolved for the most part as hunter gatherers eating a diet high in fat and protein. It is only in recent human history that we have begun to eat refined grains and sugars.

However, don't take my word for it listen to what the scientist are saying...

University of California San Francisco
Andrea Garber, is a nutritionist and a registered dietitian. Her research focuses on obesity and eating disorders. Here she explores fad diets and if they work.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPhXp8pjCjg

This next lecture is probably the best study so far and it is out of Stanford University School of Medicine...The guy doing this study is a vegetarian and he even says it was hard for him to admit the Atkins Diet was better for weight loss and lowering bad cholesterol. Atkins beat the Ornish Diet!

Christopher Gardner, PhD, assistant professor of medicine at the Stanford Prevention Research Center, has completed the largest and longest-ever comparison of four popular diets using real-world conditions, which he discusses - the lowest-carbohydrate Atkins diet came out on top.

Stanford University School of Medicine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eREuZEdMAVo

In addition to eating the typical meat, eggs and cheese...I also eat plenty of nuts (Almonds, Walnuts and Peanuts) and Avocados along with Flax Seed. I also take 5000I/U of Vitamin D and a daily Vitamin (Centrum).

You really should take a look at this lecture on Vitamin D and what the studies are showing...The scientist think they can cut Cancer Rates by up to 60% if they could get people to take a daily Vitamin D supplement. 80% of the country is Vitamin D deficient.

26. it's the best for some people
i used to be a personal trainer. i've helped a lot of people gain muscle and/or lose fat.

people's bodies work SOMEWHAT differently. keto diets (which is what Atkins is) have been around for decades before anybody knew who atkins was. mccallum refers to it as "the definition diet" in his old skool keys to progress.

anyway, there is no ONE best way to diet, just like there is no ONE exercise routine that is best for all people.

but i agree that keto diets can be very effective at fat loss.

Regardless of how good a certain diet is, it can't work if not followed correctly.

31. right but
my other point is that keto diets have different levels of effectiveness with different people. just like not everybody will get the best results from one exercise routine, some people respond better than others to keto diets. it has a lot to do with their natural hormone levels, specifically how their body reacts to sugars (insulin response), and their leptin response as well. the only way to know - is to try.

i have a friend, one of the top female strength athletes in the country, who has dieted very effectively using more of a zone type diet. she doesn't respond well to keto diets. she is too sluggish, etc. she got much better results from limiting calories while doing approximately a 40% protein 30% carb 30% fat diet.

it really is just like workout programs. for example, some lifters thrive through a bulgarian type approach, others thrive on a russian approach. some handle volume very well, others simply don't, etc.

if keto works for you - GREAT. it's a sound system. just don 't extrapolate that because it worked best for you, or a friend, that it's best for everybody.

29. It certainly went against conventional wisdom -- and it worked!
All those years of the "diet pyramid" based on carbohydrates was just making us fat. And constantly hungry.

The only way I can get through the day without feeling starved is to eat plenty of protein with at least a little fat. And I lost weight that way.

Seriously, though, why would anyone drink this junk? My guess is that it contains tons of sugar, hardly helpful in any weight loss plan.

33. Our next door neighbor can't weigh more than 110 pounds
She's also a therapist. We were on a shopping trip to Costco several months ago. She made a beeline for the Slim Fast. She "likes the taste". Sure she does.

>My guess is that it contains tons of sugar, hardly helpful in any weight loss plan.<

It would probably be more helpful to eat oatmeal or another whole food choice for breakfast. Then again, I've never been a big fan of the liquid diet. ;-)
