Katherine Harris says U.S. Senate run 'not on my radar screen'

Associated Press
Posted July 29 2003, 3:26 PM EDT

TALLAHASSEE -- Republican Congresswoman Katherine Harris disavowed any interest in the 2004 U.S. Senate race Tuesday, likening her chances of getting in to the odds of a rare astrological phenomenon.

``It would take a syzygy for me to run,'' said Harris, helping out reporters by explaining that a syzygy is when three bodies in the solar system align along a straight line.

Harris, from Sarasota, became the Republican Party's darling after the 2000 presidential recount, when, as Florida secretary of state she played a key role by certifying that George W. Bush had won the state by 537 votes, giving him the White House.

She said all along that she simply followed the letter of the law in doing so, but was widely feted by Republicans afterward before being elected last year to Congress.

Her wide name recognition has led many to speculate that she would be a good candidate in the race for the seat of Democratic Sen. Bob Graham, who is running for president. (snip/...)

1. If I type my true feelings about K. Harris...
I'll likely be expelled from DU for life. It's that vulgar.

4. From what I've seen of her
She's in way over her head as a congresswoman. All she can say is, "I fully support my governor and president."

would have a difficult time penetrating all of the makeup and hairspray, so this doesn't surprise me. I think Doppler would be needed for a basic assessment of the situation.

6. And it's not on the radar screen of Florida voters either
Not that Cruella DeVille would know anything about fair elections, but the voters do kind of have a say in this thing too. Aristocratic politicians do not get to say if a promotion to higher office is "on their radar screen" or not. THAT is the voters choice, not the choice of a bunch of fat-assed white men sitting around the table in a smoke filled hotel suite.

First thing President Dean should do upon assuming office (or some other Democrat who gets elected) is to order a full FEC audit of Katherine Harris' campaign accounts and possibly an IRS audit. Her role in the 2000 election should also be investigated by the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division.

10. The REAL reason is...
...stockpiles of make-up are not sufficient at this time to sustain a Harris for Senate campaign.
