Obama says time running out for Iran on nuclear deal
Source: Reuters

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama said Sunday time was running out for diplomacy to resolve a crisis over Iran's nuclear program, but Russian President Dmitry Medvedev offered softer criticism of Tehran.

The United States had been willing to give Iran time to decide whether to accept a U.N.-brokered deal meant to allay suspicions it is after atomic bombs but which has drawn Iranian objections, a U.S. diplomat said a week ago.

Sunday Obama, speaking after talks with Medvedev on the sidelines of an Asia-Pacific meeting in Singapore, suggested patience was running low.

"Unfortunately, so far at least, Iran appears to have been unable to say yes to what everyone acknowledges is a creative and constructive approach," Obama said while seated next to Medvedev.

2. I think the idea of Israel and Iran playing nuclear volleyball in one of the world's most important
economic, cultural and population centers of the world is very much important to America.

15. They would not be the first to "introduce nuclear weapons in the Middle East"....
Kind of like their policy of withdrawal of occupied territories.
Or honoring Geneva conventions.
Or honoring national boundaries.

At only 60 years, Israel has certainly set an interesting precedent for honor among nations.

(And yes, the wordplay above is intentional, in case anybody is wondering)

8. Of course not. This is about INTERNATIONAL PRESSURE. Iran said it would accept inspections. THAT

needs to FULLY happen. They need to follow through on complete transparency. No one is talking military attack here. The overwhelming consensus of the INTERNATIONAL community is that Iran is not a regime that should have nuke weapons. Purely peaceful nuclear electrical power is one thing, nuclear bombs quite another. They need to allow the full and complete inspections they have said they would welcome. There are many other sanction and pressure options short of a military strike if they continue to balk. So let's just cool the jets on this.

In Asia, Obama, Medvedev see nuclear pact progress

CHARLES HUTZLER
AP News

President Barack Obama said Sunday the United States and Russia would have a replacement treaty on reducing nuclear arms ready for approval by year's end, an announcement designed as an upbeat ending to a summit with Asia-Pacific leaders.

While publicizing progress with Russia on arms control — part of Obama's agenda to advance nuclear disarmament — the president and other leaders bowed to the obvious on climate change. They discussed a compromise agreement for a 192-nation gathering next month in Copenhagen, indirectly admitting that the meeting would not produce a new global treaty to reduce the heat-trapping carbon emissions that are warming the planet.

...............

Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev met on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific summit of APEC nations to announced good progress in negotiations on an updated pact to replace the START nuclear arms agreement that expires on Dec. 5.

Sitting, gesturing and leaning toward his Russian counterpart, Obama said the pair discussed a successor to the 1991 Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty and described "excellent progress over the last several months."

12. 'admitting the meeting would not produce a new global treaty to reduce heat-trapping carbon'
that's very frustrating. of course, the meeting will cause tons of carbon to be emitted into the atmosphere with all the travel to and from the meeting, cars, electricity etc...

:(

7. Can't win one way or the other.
One side: I hate getting involved in the problems of other countries. It will cost lots of money and many lives.

Other Side: Nuclear weapons in the hands of lunatics that WANT TO DIE is something that will likely kill millions of people all over the world.

Damned if we do and damned if we don't!!

Russia could end this Iran nonsense tomorrow, yet they wont. I wish the US, Russia, and China could come together and decide nobody else will ever possess these horrible weapons.

Yet just like any other issue, everyone acts in their own self interests.
