Former president Lee Teng-hui (???) said yesterday that China's deep-rooted imperial character will bring about an economic collapse and an uprising by ethnic minority groups that are oppressed by Chinese rule -- and that this will cause the downfall of the Chinese tyranny.

"China's deep-rooted imperial character will hamper modern China from fitting into international society. Eventually China will turn into a debacle, with uprisings from minority groups oppressed by China and the falling-apart of the economy," Lee said at a press conference that marked the release of The New Chinese Empire, a book by Ross Terrill, a US expert on China issues.

The book is a Chinese translation of Terrill's The New Chinese Empire, and What It Means for the United States,which was published last year.

Terrill, who holds a doctorate in political science from Harvard University, was, in 1964, one of the first scholars to enter China during the rule of the Chinese Communist Party.

Thanks for posting this. All the Sino-cheerleaders in the world can't change history or genes. A democratic PROC? Right... when pigs fly and Bushes don't lie. Hey renegade000 have you ever read the book "The Soong Dynasty"? It's a real page turner about China's civil war and in part about that mad dog Chiang Kai-shek. He was one sick puppy not to mention his wife, the one called Soong Mei-ling. Real democrats through and through.

by your reference to genes .. do you mean to say that Chinese people are somehow genetically designed to possess anti-democratic attitudes? Or that they are genetically incapable of comprehending democracy?

After I posted that I realized that was badly worded and regret phrasing it the way I did. I do not want to get into a discussion on race and just seek a path to the truth. Cultural is the main problan in China with its Confucious teaching of unquestioning obedience to authority though China was around a long time before Confuious and had no tradition of democracy then either.
