Lieberman Marching Further Right in 2010 (Plans to Campaign for GOP)

Subway Series: Former Dem Veep Candidate Plans to Campaign for GOP

Sounding more like an independent than a Democrat, Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., tells ABC News he will campaign for some Republican candidates during the 2010 midterm elections and may not seek the Democratic Senate nomination when he runs for re-election in 2012.

"I probably will support some Republican candidates for Congress or Senate in the election in 2010. I'm going to call them as I see them," Lieberman said in an ABC News "Subway Series" interview aboard the U.S. Capitol Subway System.

Lieberman infuriated fellow Democrats in 2008 by supporting Republican presidential nominee John McCain as well as congressional candidates Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y.

The moves nearly cost Lieberman his chairmanship of the Commerce Committee, but after promising to be a loyal Democrat he was allowed to keep his gavel.

Now, he says he'll do it again.

"There's a hard core of partisan, passionate, hardcore Republicans," Lieberman said. "There's a hard core of partisan Democrats on the other side. And in between is the larger group, which is people who really want to see the right thing done, or want something good done for this country and them -- and that means, sometimes, the better choice is somebody who's not a Democrat."

4. Is Dodd running in 2010 for sure?
Best case scenario would be if he retires gracefully & Ned Lamont steps in.

5. I'm pretty happy by this move.
The more he actively and explicitly thumbs his nose at the White House, Harry Reid, etc., the more he backs them into a corner and the sooner they realize he needs to be kicked out of the caucus and his chairmanship asap. More important, it brings us one step closer to reconciliation.

12. True, but it does show the futility of plans like DKos's to "put pressure"
on Lieberman. Lieberman has obviously thought this through- he actually likes the heat he gets from progressives because it fits into his broad strategy of getting publicity for himself and casting himself as some kind of man of principle standing up to pressure.

16. LIEberman is a whore for the pubs.
Fits their profile exactly. I have disliked him for about 10 years. Did not like his run for VP. Think that we should make sure he loses his chairmanship. Harry Reid needs an attitude change. He is too nice to him. He should be shunned. The pubs think he is untrustworthy and a fool.

15. Agreed. He's not a reliable "Vote # 60"
Lieberman is lockstop with policies that have been soundly rejected in the past two elections. He's also having his cake and eating it too, by going out of his way to torpedo meaningful health care reform while retaining a coveted committee chairmanship. Obama wanted to treat him with kid gloves and now we're witnessing the outcome. Joe has no sense of loyalty whatsoever (except to Republicans), and it's high time for Reid to send him packing.

6. 'Sometimes, the better choice is somebody who's not a Democrat."
Actually that is on very rare occasions true. There was an election in Connecticut in 1988 where the better choice probably wasn't the Democrat.

Democrats. I almost feel sorry for him. He will end up the least trusted man in CT.

14. Another hissy fit from Joe over not getting the nomination in 2004
Edited on Fri Oct-30-09 09:48 AM by Zambero
He was not only rejected, but shown the door very early on, and he's never forgiven Democrats for that snub. I'm sure that Joe's blue state constituency will give him much closer scrutiny the next time around.

The only "good" news about Bush II having had the election stolen for him in 2000 was that this clown was effectively prevented from being a heartbeat away from the presidency. So we got Cheney in that role, espousing the same neocon policies that Joe would have championed had he been in a position of influence on foreign policy matters. So what's worse, an out-and-out wolf, or a wolf in sheep's clothing? I'm almost willing to cast my lot with the former.

18. Lieberman is a partisan, passionate, hardcore Republican
Even if he calls himself an "Independent" and caucuses with Dems.

What a STUPID move allowing him anywhere near a position of power in the Senate.

22. He's not going to run again
I cannot believe he would try.

He knows the only people left in CT who would support him are Republicans and possibly, his staff.

And he's been behaving in a way that just screams "I don't care what you think!".

Either way, the 2012 election will see him gone.

26. This is hilarious. What political party anywhere in the world would put up with this?
How many times does Obama and the "leadership" in the Senate have to get stabbed in the back and kicked in the face before they respond?

He's no Democrat, and he's not doing us ANY favors, so they just need to cut that ugly fuck off at the knees by stripping him of all his goodies. He's so thin-skinned that he'd probably have a meltdown!
