AFPBAQUBA, Iraq — A court issued an arrest warrant for a Sunni Iraqi MP and her husband after they allegedly helped fund "terrorist activities" in Diyala province, north of Baghdad, a judge told AFP on Saturday.
However, according to a provincial council member in Diyala, police will not be able to arrest Tayseer al-Mashhadani of the Islamic Party until parliament lifts her immunity from prosecution.
Police would also be barred from arresting her husband Hisham al-Hiyali, himself a Diyala council member for the Islamic Party, in their home in the provincial capital Baquba, either alone or in her presence.
"The court in Khales issued a warrant for the arrest of Tayseer al-Mashhadani and Hisham al-Hiyali for funding terrorist activities against the people of Khales," Judge Ali al-Timimi said of a decision he delivered on Friday in the town, 65 kilometres (40 miles) north of Baghdad.
