Some black players won't play for Rush Limbaugh if he buys Rams
Source: New York Daily News

Conservative talk-show host Rush Limbaugh has some Americans that love him and plenty that hate him. And the fact that he spouts such right-wing opinions doing his day job may hurt Limbaugh's chances of getting some players if he manages to buy the St. Louis Rams, according to the New York Daily News.

New York Giants defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka(notes) would love to play again under Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo, who was his defensive coordinator in New York, but Kiwanuka is saying that there is no way he would go play for St. Louis if Limbaugh takes over. New York Jets linebacker Bart Scott(notes) told the paper the same thing yesterday and it seems that it may be a general sentiment for a lot of black NFL players.

"All I know is from the last comment I heard, he said in (President) Obama's America, white kids are getting beat up on the bus while black kids are chanting 'right on,'" Kiwanuka told the paper. "He can do whatever he wants; it is a free country. But if it goes through, I can tell you where I am not going to play."

At this point, Limbaugh and St. Louis Blues owner Dave Checketts, who is in on the bid with Limbaugh, aren't thought to be the frontrunners for the Rams.

I'd love to see this hapen if Jabba actually goes through with the purchase. But I don't think anyone will quit over it. Man do I want to be proven wrong.

They should let the team be lily white. Then when it loses, Rush's head will explode.

127. Well, the current multi-ethnic version of the Rams isn't burning up the "W" column right now
so I don't know that walkout by team players would really play much of a difference in that respect.

And what kind of nation do we live in when an idiot like Rush can afford to purchase an NFL franchise while decent, hardworking people all over can barely afford to purchase their family's next meal? We live in an imperfect world.

8. That's something I just don't get. Both regionally and racially- big sports.
I don't see how people identify with a team drawn from all over the country. I cheer my local high school, because they are my local kids. I don't give a rat's ass about the Tampa Buccaneers; because I don't live in Tampa, because the team has no real connection to this area, and because I think football is stupid.

But the race thing in sports really cracks me up. Seeing white people gush over black sports stars, and then get back in their cars and head home to neighborhoods which would be considered iffy if the black population was even half the percentage on a football team. I must be missing some aspect of this which makes it understandable.

the whole "local" team thing when they are drawn nationwide...

As for the point about people cheering on the team then returning to their segregated lives. It does make no sense, but that is the legacy of this country. Sometimes sports and the arts cross the line like that. Think of the white teenagers in the fifties listening to black artists on the radio.I heard an interview with Ray Charles one time where he said that white people really cracked him up, because they would allow a black woman to watch their children, supposedly the most precious resource, but would not allow black people to eat in the same restaurants (back then). Logic has no place in our legacy of race relations.

Back to the Rams, I am in St. Louis. It would REALLLY be bad if he bought the team. I hope more players support this action.

there are many wide receivers that could top their speed. They'd be beaten to dust. Sorry if they're heroes of yours, but it's not their game. I wouldn't think an NFL player could beat them at soccer... but in a foot race, 'you betcha'.

109. I'm not much of a spectator sports fan. It seems the standards are similar.
Which I find surprising, considering the bulk of the football players. The soccer players would probably kill the football players in distance/endurance, but in the 40 yard dash it appear they both need about a 4 second time to stand out.

39. If Limbaugh's bus fight comments were Kiwanuka's biggest beef
he, and other players of all color stripes, should hear Limbaugh's comment played over the loudspeaker at the ballfield at the earliest opportunity, where he states that Martin Luther King's assassin, James Earl Ray, deserves a posthumous Medal of Honor, which he ended with, "Godspeed you, Earl." I never understood why Imus was fired about a comment over "nappy headed 'ho's', while Limbaugh didn't even get a ripple with such a ghastly, hateful comment. It tells me more about his listeners than about Limbaugh. It kills me that my sister listens to his drivel and insists that he's not a racist. And that she isn't either, after all, don't we have a nephew that is half black and half Hispanic (we're Hispanic so she can't all him a halfrican.) But, once I heard her call him a M'igger. She said it wasn't a slur. After all, weren't my half Anglo/half Hispanic children M'anglos? It cracked her up and she was puzzled when she noticed the rest of us weren't smiling about the terms, which she'd gotten from a conservative website which named the offspring of different racial/ethnic combinations. But, she stated since there was no malice behind it, how could it be racism? I never know what to expect from her. She's gone to the Dark Side. But, I hope Limbaugh gets toasted by a full walk-out of the best African-American players there are. It's no less than he deserves. I once joked that he was a hemorrhoid on the ass of humanity. I was wrong. He's a cancer of the soul of our humanity.

130. Several racist comments by Limbaugh
Edited on Mon Oct-12-09 02:43 PM by aint_no_life_nowhere
(and I'm sure there are more)

"I mean, let’s face it, we didn’t have slavery in this country for over 100 years because it was a bad thing. Quite the opposite: slavery built the South. I’m not saying we should bring it back; I’m just saying it had its merits. For one thing, the streets were safer after dark."

"You know who deserves a posthumous Medal of Honor? James Earl Ray. We miss you, James. Godspeed."

"Have you ever noticed how all composite pictures of wanted criminals resemble Jesse Jackson?"

"Look, let me put it to you this way: the NFL all too often looks like a game between the Bloods and the Crips without any weapons. There, I said it."

"The NAACP should have riot rehearsal. They should get a liquor store and practice robberies."

"They’re 12 percent of the population. Who the hell cares?" (referring to black people)

"Take that bone out of your nose and call me back." (to an African American female caller)

"I think the media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well. They’re interested in black coaches and black quarterbacks doing well. I think there’s a little hope invested in McNabb and he got a lot of credit for the performance of his team that he really didn’t deserve."

Limbaugh has attacked Obama personally, calling him a ‘halfrican American’ calling him the ‘affirmative action candidate’ and playing a song about ‘Barack the Magic Negro’.

And in the unfortunate aftermath of the destructiveness of Hurricane Katrina, Limbaugh kept referring to the black Mayor of New Orleands again and again as "Mayor Nayger", not by his actual name of Mayor Nagin. Everyone knows what word he was actually trying to call him. All the while, he was being hyper-critical of this man.

If this were to come to pass (and it's a big if), it would certainly be interesting as to how they'd be able to sign draftees and free-agents, whatever the ethnic background.

Limbaugh's a racist, drug-addled asshole with A LOT of political and social baggage.

Whether he's doing it to make money or not is not the issue. As i said above I hope they prove me wrong if the sale goes through but I don't see any player quitting over this.

Black NFL players crush prospect of playing for a Rush Limbaugh-owned St. Louis Rams

Mathias Kiwanuka loves his former defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, but the Giants' defensive end says he will never play for Spagnuolo's Rams if Rush Limbaugh purchases the team.

Kiwanuka and the Jets' Bart Scott made it clear Thursday that they would never play for the Rams or any team owned by the controversial conservative radio host.

"All I know is from the last comment I heard, he said in (President) Obama's America, white kids are getting beat up on the bus while black kids are chanting 'right on,'" Kiwanuka told The Daily News. "I mean, I don't want anything to do with a team that he has any part of. He can do whatever he wants, it is a free country. But if it goes through, I can tell you where I am not going to play."

"I am not going to draw a conclusion from a person off of one comment, but when it is time after time after time and there's a consistent pattern of disrespect and just a complete misunderstanding of an entire culture that I am a part of, I can't respect him as a man."

...of a person based upon just one comment they've made. Here, try a few more:

"The NFL often looks like a game between the Bloods and the Crips without any weapons. There, I said it."

"I mean, let's face it, we didn't have slavery in this country for over 100 years because it was a bad thing. Quite the opposite: Slavery built the South. I'm not saying we should bring it back. I'm just saying it had its merits. For one thing, the streets were safer after dark."

"The NAACP should have riot rehearsal. They should get a liquor store and practice robberies."

but some would demand trades and some wouldn't sign with them and they'd have to pay over the top money and the franchise will fail. Simple and predictable. Marge Schott may have been despicable, but she was not anywhere close to being as publicly despicable as Rush.

98. Agreed!
"Marge Schott may have been despicable, but she was not anywhere close to being as publicly despicable as Rush."

And I also don't recall Marge having a talk show that was broadcast on thousands of radio stations five days a week AND a legion of mindless dittoheads happily repeating her racist statements every opportunity they got. Nope, old Marge may have had her 'shortcomings' when it came to respecting other people who don't look like her or shared her ethnicity or religious beliefs, but in my opinion her 'shortcomings' caused no where near the racial animus and intolerance in this country that Limbaugh loves to take credit for.

120. Marge may not have had a talk show, but dismissing her hate as a "shortcoming" is absurd
Edited on Sun Oct-11-09 09:00 AM by onenote
Schott's unrepentant racism, homophobia and anti-semitism was not a mere shortcoming and anyone on a progressive board that characterizes it as such either doesn't know their history or has some serious issues.

Some of Marge admitted statements:
Schott on outfielders Eric Davis and Dave Parker: "million-dollar niggers"
Schott, who acknowledged that she owed a Nazi swastika, on Jews: "sneaky goddamn Jews are all alike."
Schott on Hitler: he was "good in the beginning, but went too far."
Schott on why she opposed her players wearing earings: "only fruits wear earrings."

There are other examples as well. She was banned from running the reds on more than one occasion and the fact that the U of Cincy baseball field is named for her is simply offensive.

on edit: this isn't meant to suggest that many African-American football players wouldn't play for a Rush-owned team-- I believe them when they say they would not. As for why African Americans played for Schott? I don't know, but the fact that they did doesn't turn her hate into something that can or should be dismissed with the wave of the hand.

Al Davis was the owner that hired the first black head coach. Art Schell may not have been a great coach, but he was the first. Hell Davis hired him twice just to make sure that he couldn't do the job.

And he was a founding member of the AFL that had no problem drafting black football players thereby putting pressure on the NFL to integrate as well. I have no idea what Al Davis thinks inside but I have seen his actions. Art Shell twice? THAT doesn't sound like a racist to me. lol

Oh yeah, Rush is a puke and will NOT pass ownership approval. I also wouldn't be surprised to see the Players Union come out against his involvement in any way with the league.
