Health Industry Concerned About Reform Measures
Leaders Warn That Democrats' Bills Would Leave Too Many Uncovered

By Ceci Connolly
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, October 9, 2009

The industry heavyweights President Obama neutralized through the summer are agitating that the health-care bills in Congress violate agreements they made with the White House, leave 25 million Americans uninsured and have the potential to increase medical costs

One day after Democrats celebrated the news that a bill drafted in the Senate Finance Committee would not increase the deficit, the prospects for speedy enactment of landmark reform grew murkier. Industry leaders, who have held their tongues for months, spoke in increasingly dire tones Thursday about the impact of the Democratic proposals, raising the specter of an eleventh-hour lobbying campaign to defeat Obama's centerpiece domestic policy goal.

Many lobbyists and independent analysts underlined what they called major flaws in the Finance Committee's bill, saying it probably would draw the sickest, most expensive patients into the health coverage system without balancing the insurance risk with more young, healthy people. The result, they predicted, would be ever-rising premiums for the people, businesses and governments that pay for medical care.

"The consequences of this would be an upward spiral; rate shock to everyone who stays in," said Karen Ignagni, president of the industry group America's Health Insurance Plans. "This legislation will fail the test of affordability for individuals."

2. Damn, they're right
I guess an immediate move towards a single payer system is the only thing we can do to address their concerns.

Thanks for your input Big Insurance.

14. Did anyone send any single payer bill to the Congressional Budget Office
so that we could know what that would do to the budget and the deficit?

If not, why not?

Shouldn't each and all of us be asking our Representatives about that?

6. Hmmm. They held their tongues for months
And now the momentum is on the side of reform. They are talking ever rising premiums and rate shock if this passes. Just how is that different from what we see from them, now? Put the rate controls in place and tell them if they want to operate here they follow the rules. If they don't, we have a nice little HR 676 all ready to go. I don't think an eleventh hour lobbying campaign can defeat the reform now.

9. They want everyone covered - by the government, if necessary.
Mandatory purchase if you can afford it (even if you have to quit eating), subsidies or a full government ride if you can't.

They have no intention of paying for care any more than they do now - the denials and rescissions will go on as usual. It's all about raking in the dough on 100% of the citizenry. 'Cause they care, y'know?

10. Their greed has no limit.
And notice in the OP, they want the young healthy ones forced to buy their crappy high deductible catastrophic-only crap. At taxpayer expense if necessary, as you correctly assert.

12. And jail if the govt says you can afford, but you don't buy it.
Government mandates for private benefit are unacceptable.

We should all start throwing rotten tomatoes at effigies of Baucus.

What kind of bullshit PR game are they playing? The health industry is bankrolling all of those fake citizen groups that are targeting health care. This is all PR bullshit.

25. Their concerns can be easily addressed. All we have to do to save
money, is eliminate them altogether. Why should one third of people's premiums go to pay for their expensive lifestyles? Speaking of the 'most expensive people'. And if 'Healthcare' is not meant to take care of the 'sickest', what IS it for?

Another way to eliminate wasted spending is to cut the military budget and start bringing American troops home from around the world. Just that would probably save more American lives than any other action the government could take.

So, eliminate private defense contractors and private health insurance corps and we would have no problem paying for the best healthcare system in the world.
