President Barack Obama presides over a Historic (& Unanimous) UN Vote over Nuclear Disarmament
Edited on Thu Sep-24-09 10:26 AM by TheCoxwain
Source: AP

With U.S. President Barack Obama presiding over an historic session, the U.N. Security Council unanimously approved a U.S.-drafted resolution Thursday aimed at ridding the world of nuclear weapons.

Russia, China and developing nations supported the U.S.-sponsored measure, giving it global clout and strong political backing.

The resolution calls for stepped up efforts to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons, promote disarmament and "reduce the risk of nuclear terrorism."

It was only the fifth time the Security Council met at summit level since the U.N. was founded in 1945. And Obama was the first American president to preside over a Security Council summit, gaveling the meeting into session and announcing that "the draft resolution has been adopted unanimously."

60. Obama seems to invite international prosecution of Bush officials
From the NY Times:

Mr. Obama said that the resolution was about ensuring that international agreements have real-world heft. “International law is not an empty promise, and treaties must be enforced,” he said.
----
This would seem to be a statement inviting other countries to seek prosecution under the the Geneva Conventions.

That is why the right hates him so much because his actions will remake the world in a peaceful image and undoing them will be politically impossible.

be demanding the continuation of bombs because not having proliferation is too much governnment. Maybe this will freshen on the argument for this one - move away from the too much govt to unprotected because of the degree we are hated for our freedoms.

Does this mean that Cheney and Khan will break up?

What's the difference between stopping and ridding? One takes longer?

Very cool indeed....I keep saying that Barack is playing a 3 dimensional game of chess while everyone else thinks it is still a game of checkers....he is so far ahead on multiple issues and that is because he approaches problem solving from a totally different perspective...people with cognitive dissonance just don't get it.

Historical moment...

42. I'm not convinced that this is good.
There is something to be said for mutually assured destruction. The first 50 years of the 20th century saw two world wars where almost 100 million people were killed. While we have had plenty of wars since then, no one has wanted to go the nuclear route. Losses due to war, have been far less, even though there are many more people in the world and the conventional weapons are far deadlier. The US lost 400,000 in the second world war alone. I doubt that people have gotten nicer. I think it's because they have less to gain and more to lose in a nuclear world when picking a fight.

44. I really doubt that we will actually go down to zero nuclear weapons... MAD will continue to exist
but without having to spend billions in maintaining 10's of thousands war heads ..

we can have just 10 warheads -- and yet have deterrence.

More importantly -- the few that remain can be safeguarded reliably- and that reduces the fear that non state actors will get their hands on one.

My father and grandfather both served in world wars. My brother and I didn't have to. I attribute it to the nuclear weapons and the fact that we dealt with a somewhat rational Soviet Union.

80. There's also a book called "Hiroshima Diary" that you might want to read.
I saw a copy and bought it on a whim. It's a translated excerpt from the personal diary of a doctor who lived in Hiroshima. He was there when we dropped the bomb on August 6, 1945, and the excerpt runs from August 6 to late September. The 29th, I think.

Grisly stuff.

70. This is wonderful!
Obama must have worked very quickly on this. It is amazing that this progress has been made in just the short time that he has been in office.

I am one of the loudest to voice disagreement with policies I believe are wrong. But I think that at this time it looks like Obama may be the greatest president we have ever had thus far in terms of making progress toward international peace.

This is just a first step, but we finally seem to be headed in the right direction.

76. Great News. No more blow up the world?
I remember when I was a kid, they taught me in grade school it was important to read the newspaper every day, a lesson I took to heart and ended up reading nearly the whole paper everyday (sometimes I'd skip stories after reading the title and first paragraph) During some of the years of the latter 60s and early 70s, I remember being quite convinced we were all going to die at any moment in nuclear annihilation, all as a result of reading the news. It was scary.

Maybe future kids won't need to be as scared as I was.

84. The number one job of our Govt
Is to protect the country and it's citizens from outside attack. All other considerations are secondary. I'm all for a cut in nuclear weapons, lets say 500 for countries that already have them. The day we give them all up is the day we become hostage to the one rogue nation that has one.

90. i agree partly
as long as their is nuclear weapon know how (and there will certainly always be), then we should have a decent deterrent.

its just one of those sad facts of life....

87. Now that the nuclear powers have reaffirmed an "aspirational goal"
To disarm someday, they could use this to justify invading any potential nuclear state that they feel like.

Nuclear powers will disarm the day that aliens force them to.

89. its always good to dream
but we always have to wake up

the sad truth is that nukes are not going anywhere for a long time...or ever for a matter of fact. Even if society could get rid of all nukes, the knowledge on how to make one is still there.

Nuclear weapons are seen by smaller countries as their only military equalizer when it comes to the big boys (U.S., China...). They know that their conventional military force will never be able to withstand the full might of a major countries force, but they can attempt to create a mexican standoff.

96. HellOOOOoooo
The resolution calls for stepped up efforts to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons, promote disarmament and "reduce the risk of nuclear terrorism."
This resolution calls for stepped up efforts to prevent the spread of drugs, promote no drugs and "reduce the risk of hard drugs."
Seems to me to actually be a declaration of war.
The only way to accomplish it is military.
Who's going to be the first to turn in their last nuclear weapon?
No I'm not anti Obama. I voted for him and support him on many issues.
I am not against him on this.
I just see something different than you.

climate change is.

So, woohoo @ nuclear disarmament (expensive for all countries involved, and no longer necessary)....they/we've got BIGGER ISSUES ~ climate change and resource issues ~ to address, like YESTERDAY!
