ABC News Was Misquoted on (9/12 Protest) Crowd Size
Edited on Sat Sep-12-09 11:57 PM by Tx4obama
Source: ABC News

ABC News Reported D.C. Rally Size in Tens of Thousands, Not 1M to 1.5M as Activist Said.

<SNIP>

Matt Kibbe, president of FreedomWorks, the group that organized the event, said on stage at the rally that ABC News was reporting that 1 million to 1.5 million people were in attendance.

At no time did ABC News, or its affiliates, report a number anywhere near as large. ABCNews.com reported an approximate figure of 60,000 to 70,000 protesters, attributed to the Washington, D.C., fire department. <SNIP>

As a result of Kibbe's erroneous attribution, several bloggers and commenters repeated the misinformation.

Be sure when you go to the ABC News link to look under the photos for the 2nd part of the article.

Also:

I have sent the ABC News link and info to Politifact.com asking them to post an article regarding this on their Truth-O-Meter with a 'pants on fire' rating for the fib that the Prez of FreedomWorks told on stage.
People all over the net, Twitter, FB, etc. are using the 1 to 2 Million figure. Palinites and Beckites have been celebrating the 2 million number - and it is incorrect!

33. All the speeches were filled with lies, so why would the crowd count be any different?
I'm sure they will continue to bask in the faux glory of their fantasy number. Glad to see ABC post the denial right away. I saw this yesterday and could find no mention of anything on ABC or any other network for that matter of anything more than "tens of thousands". It reminds me of how they were encouraged to spread out in town hall meetings and be constant disrupters to make it seem like there numbers were greater. I would bet it started as just by one of the baggers misreading a quote of what they expected as opposed to how many actually showed up and then wishful thinking, instead of fact checking passed it along on the internets and eventually into the speakers on stage who showed themselves for who they are- charlatans.

I went to an anti Iraq war march and rally in NYC a few years ago and there were estimated to be over 400,000 people who marched and the major networks barely mentioned it- the only media we saw there was left wing bloggers and foreign press. It was a shameful display of media silence. CNN carried the whole baggers charade live, and it was front page news on every site. 60,000 at best.

2. By calculation crowd extent, and making a few educated
guesses on density, I have a number of 20K. 60K would be near impossible (that would require a density of 1 person per every 5 sq ft. and by looking at closeups, there was plenty of room for lawn chairs and blankets and such.)

Try standing with a room full of people crowded into 2ft by 2ft squares each (the size of a computer room tile, btw), you can do it, but most people feel an invasion of their "personal" space and want at least an arm's length between them and the next person, unless spouse or family member. People only do that when constrained by an enclosure, or pressed in by the outer bands of the crowd. This crowd wasn't big enough (unlike, say, the inauguration crowd) to self caused constraint, and I could see no reason that they couldn't spill down the mall...

78. When I watched the coverage
They were saying maybe ten thousand, or in the ten thousands. It seemed about right, as anytime they show a picture of a crowd from very close, you know they are trying to make it look larger than it actually was. I watched NBC's coverage, which is a notably further right channel than MSNBC, more like CNN, and FUX-Use Network. I also noted not only did their coverage lack a wide-shot, but in the close cropped shot they did show, people were not even positioned densely.

It all goes along with what I've noticed since right about when the House decided to put a sur-tax on their health care bill on the very rich, like Brian Williams, Katie Couric, Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, and Chris Mathews. The coverage of Obama has really gotten unfair, and the coverage of his politcal detractors has grown massively.

Clearly it was a small rally, and the press tried to blow it up way larger than it was. We'll see what the Sunday shows say, since I have them recorded, and will watch them later.

86. The method is pretty straight forward
and one that I've used for many such crowds (starting with the original antiwar demonstrations when the left was accusing the media of under reporting crowd size).

Get an accurate overhead photo of the event. Use google planimeter (or other such tool) to outline (as precisely as you can) the area the crowd occupies. That gives you an estimate of sq. ft. (or acres or whatever).
Now, if you also have close-ups of the crowd, you can start making an estimate of density. Blankets spread out, lawn chairs deployed, lots of space between groups, that's one density, standing shoulder to shoulder when marching, that's another density.

Do some math and you have a rough estimate.

The method is fairly accurate.

I estimated an upper bound of 30K for yesterday's event. Probably more like 20K or 25K. UNfortunately, I have yet to see a definitive overhead shot when they rallied at the capitol steps, but there was some "overlooking" video, and you can see the trees and other landmarks where the crowd peters out.

7. It was disinformation, not misinformation. Misinforming is accidental, disinforming is on purpose...

Misinformation is false or inaccurate information that is spread unintentionally. It is distinguished from disinformation by motive in that misinformation is simply erroneous, while disinformation, in contrast, is intended to mislead.

It's a common mistake that's being perpetuated by the MSM and I feel that it needs to be corrected every time it appears. I've had to make about 5 posts about this since I've noticed the wrong word being used over the past couple of weeks and feel it's important to continue doing so until we stop seeing 'misinformed' being used incorrectly.

..........Look, Einstein, "official" crowd figures come from the police/fire departments and if they say 50 to 70K then that's the "official" number. You better "your" youtube video over to worldnut daily, they'll love and more importantly believe it AND you.

83. What a silly statement.
1. It is not "my video". I found it googling because I wanted to see actual pictures of the crowd to get an idea of what really happened, regardless of what "official" number is reported. I have a healthy skepticism about such things.

2. If you want to believe that the video shows 50 to 70K, go ahead. But don't tell me that your belief is based on quantitative reasoning.

I did not give an estimate of the crowd, but I can do so here.

Pennsylvania Ave is about 180 ft across (including sidewalks) and 6000 ft long from the point where the pictures were taken (easily confirmed with google maps). If the spacing was on average 4 ft between people, then the length of Pennsylvania avenue holds 67,500. And it is clear that the video shows the crowd moving down the street, filling it, and keeping it filled for some time. Without a time stamp it would be hard to judge, but the crowd was much more than 50-70K - probably 3-4 times that.

41. Just an observation...
I don't know what time increment was used for this, or if the increment was changed at the end, but at 0:16, the crowd takes a huge leap, from massing a half block from the closest intersection, to all the way down the street to the Capital.. Scrubbing through it, I would think it would be a more gradual progression than that.

Look at the lower right hand corner - you will see a DC flag. Behind that flag, parked in front of the building, is a white vehicle, and behind it is a dark-colored vehicle. Those vehicles are in the same places in both pictures.

12. Hardly fear
Even the police estimate 60k at the most. There were no reports of them needing any extra help with the crowd-which is what you would need with a million people anywhere for any reason. Nobody requested overtime work. No reports of crowded subways, hotel rooms, traffic jams, or people needing extra food, water. There were no rows of portapotties. Nothing to accommodate a mass crowd.

Six months notice. Enough time to bring not only themselves, but extended families. Enough time to not only protest, but to also set aside time for sightseeing before and after the protest. Where did folks go afterwards, and how many people took advantage of the trip to do something?

13. Crowd Size Likely 1 Million +
If you compare the crowd density taking from an arial shot and then compare it to the crowd estimates given for the Obama inaguration, the crowd sizes are extremely simular.

At least 1,000,000 people in attendance is a rather astute claim.

ETA link to the video on DU and correct brain fog "duh": :eyes:

122. Thanks for the link
By squinting, these old eyes made out that the video was shot at 3:54 Eastern Time (the time stamp keeps shifting between Pacific and Eastern time for some reason). That was after the festivities were mostly over, if I recall the television coverage correctly. I walked down the Mall at midday and the crowd was much thicker.

116. So basically they couldn't even fill up the space at the foot of the Capitol
Across the street looks like an ordinary Saturday at the mall. So 20-50K (assuming this pic ain't all of them) sounds about right.

During the Inauguration it was packed solid past the Washington Monument. Way Past.

Probably got more protesters in DC during Iran's recent election fiasco.

I was lone progressive with the "Tax The Rich" sign. I received a lot of ridicule and scorned looks. There were definitely not 1.5 million people there. Best I can figure is it was closer to 1 million. However, I tell you this sincerely because I don't want my bretheren to underestimate the growing threat.

The only pics I ever saw were taken by private parties...not news media.

here's one to compare with your screen capture....

This was the start of the women's rights march

should have been all over this and the anti-war marches that also had huge turn outs from what I recall.

Sadly they long ago ditched trying to be balanced and feel that they only answer to their big corporate (rich) owners. They used to at least be subtle, now they're flat out blatant about it and still many don't see what's in front of their faces.

My journalism profs would be ripping their hair out over how the media is now.

The bottom line is that if these people - Republican office holders included - were upset about spending, they might have given some indication of that during the Bush years. These are the folks tho couldn't rubber stamp the Bush spending spree fast enough. That's why we're in this mess. And, as a side note, I expect all those at the teabagger even who were over 65 to send in their Medicare cards on Monday. No government healthcare for you.

45. The OTHER event on the Mall, the Black Family Reunion Celebration
Surreal that, that particular combo.

The main point is: any arial photos that don't show two events on the Mall (tea baggers near the Capitol, BFRC near the Smithsonian) are probably photos from some previous march (IOW, fakes).

I can't find attendance estimates for yesterday's BFRC, but their history page (http://www.ncnw.org/events/reunion_history.htm ) claims "more than 500,000 each year" attending the two- or three-day celebration. At the very least they had a sizable crowd themselves which the teabaggers should not be allowed to claim as part of their numbers.

I ask because I've been in a crowd of 90,000 (outdoor music festival) that felt much bigger than Hatch Shell crowds on the 4th of July(typically 200,000-300,000.) It's not as easy as it seems.

89. Estimate
If the crowd estimates from the Inauguration are accurate, and I have no reason to believe they aren't, there were more than a million people packed between the Capitol and the Washington Monument that day. I was among them, did some walking around before the crowd got so thick I had to rejoin my family or be separated from them for the duration. (Where we were, on the south side of the Mall below the American Indian Museum, people were packed so tightly we couldn't move during the ceremonies. Great crowd BTW. We were all friends, at least for a day!)

The crowd yesterday wasn't that thick, but as I walked the Mall I had to say it was about half the Inauguration "density." Sorry, can't think of the right word right now. They pretty much covered the Mall from the reflecting pool in front of the Capitol to the WashMon, but not cheek by jowl the way we were in January. I didn't go beyond the WashMon, but I could see other people moving around below it. Not sure if they were part of the protest or not, although some appeared to have signs. I left. It felt, I dunno, uncomfortable.

As for how the media arrived at their estimates, I guess you'd have to ask them. I know they didn't jibe with my observations.

98. Time stamp
Edited on Sun Sep-13-09 01:16 PM by Shorebound
I saw that photo further up this thread and asked the poster about the time stamp in the upper right corner because I wanted to send it to some friends. It looks like 12:56 pm PT (Pacific Time) but I can't be sure on this monitor. If it is Pacific Time, then it's only 9:56 a.m. Eastern Time, which is several hours before I walked through there shortly after noon.

Edited to add: Thanks to Hansel above, I am corrected. Assuming the time stamp is 12:56 pm PT, then it was 3:56 pm ET when the photo was taken. That would be several hours after I went through there.

136. How are you drawing your 1/2 million conclusion?
David Schulster stated that whenever crowds only make it to 3rd street, there's no more that 30, 000 people. Also, considering freepers are spamming the internet with false photos of their event tells me it was a total humiliating flop. This event had non stop promotion by Beck and Fox news for 6 months - and they could only muster about 30, 000 "people" to attend.

President Obama attracted 20,000 people to see him speak with only three day's notice - here in the Twin Cities.

Emotions are running deep with the racist Dixiecrat party (formerly known as the GOP) but not for the majority of the nation - who are rational. :hi:

the same emotions they have been generating and living with since 9/11 to the extreme, and long before that as a rule.

What a moronic interpretation of the text, George.

95. Corporate Media Bias
Bias without a doubt, oh yeah, there was a huge crowd protesting the inauguration of what they (correctly) saw as an illegitimate president who in actuality lost the 2000 election - and the networks went out of there way to not show it or represent it accurately. This has happened time and again, with anti war rallies and any gathering/protest promoting a contrary world view.

however if 40 insane tea baggers or birthers or whatevers get together it gets overblown coverage and exposure.

Welcome to "1984" in 2009.

102. Another example of how isolated and out of touch these people are
If I was in that crowd and someone tried to tell me it was a million to 1.5 million strong I think I could pick up right away that they were full of it. These people bought it hook, line and sinker because they have no ability to analyze and no real experience outside of their little closed minded community.

Yeah, when you come from towns of 100 people (clearly an exaggeration but we can both play this game) then tens of thousands of people seems like a million. But people who really observe the world would know that if there a consistently a foot to several feet of distance between everyone that it would be impossible for there to be a million people on that mall.

Of course, these are the same silly little fool who think that just because everyone they associate with feels like they do that they are a majority of the country.

105. Estimates are a tricky business
At the October 27, 2007 anti war march in Los Angeles, The LA times reported 700 people. 700 from the police department, maybe. I had estimated 7,000; the organizer later claimed almost 10,000.

112. How far do we stoop to their level?
They tell lies all the time. Liberals believe deep down that the truth will eventually "set them free", and exonerate them and defeat any lies. But what if the MSM doesn't play along? ie. doesn't do their job? Just look at the crimes of the Bush administration going unpunished. In the healthcare debate there is no vigorous debunking of outrageous myths, they take any statement as 'fair' and give waaaaaaaay to much respect to the liers. Always a he said she said position. Never any real investigative journalism and challenge to the liers. The US is rapidly slipping into fascism, they use any means they want, no morals, scaring grandmothers, fanning racism, socialism, etc..with lies lies and more lies.

The Dems are handcuffed by what we thought would eventually win the day....truth.

And even if the Dems wanted to counter the rhetoric, calling them facsists, and started talking like Nadar, or Chomsky, they'd be smirked and sneered off the screen by Wolf Blitzer et all. But one wonders if that is the only course of action now. If they had the balls that is.

Edited on Sun Sep-13-09 02:07 PM by Mr. Sinister
What does it matter? How often have progressives mobilized people in to the streets to protest the war, racism, health-care etc and our efforts have been routinely ignored? Enjoy the receiving end right wing! We live in a representative not a direct democracy and unless you can translate your little gathering to numbers at the polls, all you have is a festive day outside and the condescending jeers of your opponents. What goes around....

123. perhaps
they counted every person who walked by, who stopped and gawked, who tried to walk to one of the nearby museums, stopped to eat at one of the carts that line the mall, or waited for one of the metro buses that stop at the Botanical Gardens near the capital.

Then they multiplied that number by 1,000. Then again why wouldn't the right lie about how many people showed? Maybe the truth will come up and bite them one day. Then again they wouldn't know what it was then either.

132. They're obviously delusional and, like BushCo, believe
that if you tell a lie enough times it makes it true. :eyes: They're spreading these BS numbers all over the place and no amount of FACTS and figures is stopping them. :grr:

135. YEs. That is their tried and true strategy.
Sometimes I feel like the top of my head is going to blow off when I hear these jaw-dropping lies...and then see that there are those out there that appear to believe. One can only surmise that those "believers" have nothing inside their heads with which to see how incredibly assinine they are being.

And you are on the money when stating that this has been going on since the pres shit-for-brains was given the presidency by the Supreme Court. Actually..it had going on even before the beginning of the campaign of 1999..

140. Certainly I think I can understand the top of
head blowing off.. the utter stupidity and audacity of the lies still amazes me at times. Their reality train has completely jumped off the tracks and into the valley below.

I guess they figure if they throw out enough yit sooner or later something will stick. It's been going on for a very long time.. certainly many here can recall how they threw everything and the kitchen sink at the Clintons. The only thing they finally got Bill Clinton on was lying about an affair... pathetic.

Dems may be the "feral cat" party ;) but at least we don't automatically buy everything our political leaders tell us without any thought. The Republicans used to mock us for being intellectuals but even years later we're still the party of caring and brains to their bullying & brainless bravado.

129. Rule of thumb when it comes to crowd estimates and what the media reports
Whatever they say for progressive protesters - multiply it by 4.

Whatever they say for conservative nutjobs - divide it by 10

If they said 1 to 1.5 million protesters perhaps tops they got about 100-150k. And remember that the media will also include all the anti-protesters, police, media reporters and passerbys in that count too.

She's a Facebook friend, too, and she posted the 1 to 1.5 million number when she returned home last night. She's what we in the South call "very well-off." In other words, she has health insurance.
